#1 Oscillating Tacho

Post by Bill Molloy » Mon Jun 01, 2009 2:41 pm

Not not the Mexican type, the rev counter.

Car ran beautiful to Tatton Park on Sunday but periodically the tacho would swing all over the place and then settle down for a while before doing it again. Its been doing it for years but I have not got around to looking at it.

I'm assuming the tacho is a bit iffy. Maybe dirt or a dry solder joint ?

Has anyone cured this problem ?

Bill

The tacho on the S2 works off the coil and is regarded as more reliable than the S1. Certainly worth checking all electrical connections are secure first. I had a similar problem with my S1 tacho last week and I cured it by spraying the bearings and movement with copious amounts of Ambersil Amberklene FE10 fast drying solvent (leaves no residue, will not damage dial face) and moving the needle backwards and forwards gently for a few minutes. Seems to have solved the problem and the tachometer works perfectly. Switch cleaner would work but test on a small area first to make sure you do not end up with a shiny silver dial.

We went to Tatton Park and it certainly proved the efficiency of the cooling system, ably aided by the Kenlowe fan. Lots of traffic jams getting close and a 20 minute queue to gain entry. Saw your car but you were not around - I did ask but the answers I got ranged from "I'm new here" to "Never heard of him". Still we had a fantastic blast back over the Cat & Fiddle and the Dales. Not sure what those funny round signs with '50' on meant which have sprouted up everywhere. I assumed it was an anniversary of some sort and pressed on

Thanks David I'll give it a try.

Sorry I missed you at Tatton, it was pretty hot all day and the park was full. I don't know if you saw the maroon S2 Coupe right in front of mine, he has done a top class job on that car. I just don't know how he can use it AND keep it that clean. I mean clean is an understatement. The whole of the engine compartment components have a better shine on them than the outside of my car !
