As long as the engine was out of the car they were doing fine but now two of them had stuck valves.

I cleaned and 'more or less' overhauled my 4 carbs but the valves seemed to work like a charm so i did not fix the new ones (what a mistake :) )
Is there some cleaning additive I can locally add to the fuel (something similar exists for mowers) when sitting unused for a while ?

Some more questions related to this:
What would be the suggested way to fix new valves with the engine in the car ?
It seems almost impossible to open the middle rear screw of the swimmer housing to me.
It is also a pain in the a.. to remove the carbs from the inlet manifold.
Knocking helped with the second carb but I don't trust either of them any more.

I read something about ball valves supposed to be more reliable - are such also available for the 175 ?
Did someone modify the carbs to be able to emergency close a stuck valve (e.g. drill a hole in the swimmer housing and weld a nut or similar) ? Can I unscrew/remove the brass cover on the bottom (I simply forgot but it was in some plastic ?)
Did any of you weld something to the six screws (or at least the middle rear) or use allen screws to be able to undo them more easily - they seem to have an odd thread ?
Can I drop the rear center screw in the future ?

How much would be estimated costs to kick the Strombergs out and go for 6 carbs and should it be SU's or Webers ? (bit fed up in the moment)

So don't! Instead, remove the cross pipes linking one side from the other, drain some coolant, undo the short rubber hoses linking to the water housings, undo the inlet manifold to head nuts and..... remove the entire assembly as a unit.

You now have full easy access to work on the carburettors on the bench.

For some unexplainable reason I did not want to take the manifolds off the engine just to fix two sticking valves - instead I was fiddling around :D
Next time I will do it as you suggested. :banghead:

I used my S3FHC to Jag 60th event yesterday. Yes the carbs were rebuilt some while back. Engine was humming on all 12. Yes the strombergs can run well. Fluffy at traffic stops and bit erratic but I;ve put a lot of time into these and they can run well. I always pot in 150 ml of hydraulic fluid Dex 3 ATF into the tank before I fill up. I reckon it lubricates and cleans all the pump parts and float jets. Got just over 17 MPG UK..
