Hi All,
I have a series three v12 and the last two times I have been out in the car it wouldn't start again when hot after it had been sitting for half an hour or so. The first time it did start again eventually but the second time it did not and I had to call a recovery truck. Once the recovery truck arrived about two and a half or three hour's later it started up perfectly like nothing had happened.
It starts from cold fine.
Anything obvious to check? I am thinking the most likely problem is the amplifier or coil. It does have a new but now about two years old upgraded ignition system from sng Barratt though so would have hoped tye could and amplifier would have lasted longer than two years. Can anyone offer some advice on the most common causes of such an issue? Many thanks! Tom

Hi i had the same problem with my s3 it was flooding so embarrassing if i stopped for 10 mins it would start if i stopped for 2 hours it would start, but go in a cafe for a coffee for half an hour it would not start it always did it when it had people admiring it. Put your foot to floor on the gas pedal and crank continually till it starts i ended up converting to SU carbs sorted it out started anytime .Never got to bottom of problem with the carbs i consider the Stromberg's to be very poor and over complicated

Well jagwit all i can say about Stromberg's is i have worked in the motor trade 44 years and every car that has them fitted have had problems with carburation SU carbs cause no where near as much trouble
Let us leave it at that as i can see in your other posts you like to know best

I had exactly this problem with my XJ12 Series 1. Exactly the same set up as the E type. The only added symptom is that the car started to misfire until eventually stopping. It would not re start until the engine had cooled quite a lot. This problem had me scratching my head for quite a long while it had to be said! I also had the SNG Barratt ignition upgrade and eventually I sent that back to be tested by SNG at their recommendation. They had previously advised fitting the amplifier on the front panel above the radiator, removing it from the valley. That has certainly been a cause of ignition over heating on V12s and worth considering if your amplifier is with the engine "V".
In my case it turned out that the electric eye that interacts with the reluctor wheel had become rusty , presumably through lack of use of the car ( 10 mpg to the gallon!) . This caused the coil to be sparking many more times than it is designed to and overheating. Once the distributor was changed and the coil and amplifier, I have had no more problems with the car .
As far as the Strombergs , I have these on early Range Rovers and of course the XJ12. I have not experienced any non start issues with them and on the RR they are very reliable indeed. I have just rebuilt the 4 on the XJ12 as the plug in the bottom of the fuel bowls were leaking.
