#1 Gearbox number confusion

Post by OzDave » Fri May 15, 2026 9:46 pm

Hi everyone, I’ve applied to get a heritage certificate for my recently purchased series 3 roadster. They have come back questioning my gearbox number stating that it may have been misread. It looked pretty clear to me but the last digit may not be fully stamped. I’ve attached a picture of the plate. Does anyone have any ideas about the gearbox number being something different than KL6690?

Could very well be. Might be a case of can’t see the forest for the trees-been looking at it for too long..

Excellent question. I can’t get to the car until Wednesday and will then have a look. Newbie question-can you see the gb number easily?

You asked: "Newbie question-can you see the gb number easily?"

Here is my origoinal tranny fresh from the tunnel. Note the clean area on the right side of the tranny in the photo:

That stamping is on the cover of the tranny.
Getting to it will likely involve removing the tunnel cover or a lucky stab with a mirror on a hinged stick.

It is also stamped on the body of the tranny case:

The blue arrow is pointing to the proper side/edge of the case, but the actual location is closer to the shifter.
Both location will likely need cleaning or oil/grease/crud to get to legible readings.
