#1 V12 Vibration

Post by Will Caradoc-Hodgkins » Sun Mar 16, 2008 6:14 pm

I have a very odd vibration which seems to come in at about 3000rpm, 70 plus mph when on motorway. Driving through the gears it is not noticeable. The vibration is a rhythmic thrumming but difficult to say where it is coming from but feels from the engine.
I have converted my V12 to SU's using the Bulen kit. The clutch and gearbox have just been sorted as well as new UJ's on propshaft.
New front and rear springs and shocks done.
I have had all the wheel alignments etc. done.
There seems to be two views one is the propshaft is out of balance the other is that there is some sort of fueling problem with one or more of the carbs or maybe fuel starvation etc. The fuel pump is the original one so i have no idea if it is producing the right level of fuel and pressure.
Any bright ideas appreciated.
Will

Have you tried re balancing the wheels, they normally start vibrating around 70-80mph and you can drive through it.

It's well worth checking as it is cheep to fix.

Let me know how you get on.

A rather late responce to your thoughts back in March.
I have just got back onto the Forum hence this.
I have now had the propshaft balanced still the vibration.
I will get the wheels balanced again, they have been done when I had the alignment done.
I have also been told that wheel bearings can cause vibration, but I am told by K&N that mine are fine.
It now seems that the boys at K&N, who do all the work on my car, now think it is the rear bearing in the rear casing of the gearbox or that the output shaft is not true. The gear box was rebuilt and given to K&N to fit though the old rear casing from old box was reused. The bearing in the old rear casing wasn't replaced so this might be the culprit.Any way engine out again. All very depressing and very expensive as the engine has now been out three times.
When I get a result I will let you know.
Cheers
Will

Just a thought, Will, but maybe a good opportunity to get a 5 speed upgrade? In the scheme of things, not much more than getting the old box overhauled again.

How have you found the SU upgrade? Have you noticed a great difference in performance / fuel consumption? Have you retained the original air filters, or gone for aftermarket ones? I have a set of SUs ready to go on, but the lure of fuel injection is calling! And a spare 6 litre TWR engine parked in the corner isn't making decisions any easier.

The Su's is a tricky one.
My Stromgbergs needed rebuilding which I was quoted ?160 a piece so decided on the SU conversion. Does the car run any better etc. not sure as the comparison with tired Strombergs might be missleeding.

Notwithstanding this the SU's seem more linear in delivery and with marginly better fuel consumption.

Yes I kept the standard air filters/boxes as they draw air in, from in front of the radiator shroud, which in theory is cooler and denser. Also the engine bay still looks original though I'm not that bothered about that sort of issue.

A nice set of aftermarket filters are tempting, do you know of any options on this?

I take it you have a Series 3 as well as the 65 Black Coupe?

Now putting a 6 litre V12 into an earlier coupe now that would be very sexy. Has it been done before?

I have been looking at the AJ6 Engineering fuel injection on their site and like you are tempted to get their book on the subject.

Cheers for now

#6 vibration & gearbox

Fotgot to address your comment on a 5 speed gearbox.

Having now spent a few thousand getting new cluch & flywheel balanced, propshaft rebuilt and balanced and the gearbox rebuilt its probably too late.
A new 5 speed gearbox with adapted propshaft and bellhousing is going to be ?3, 4 or ?5,000 I guess. I wish now I had done this as if I knew I would be going through all this it would have made sense. If I could do it for less I still would, as I could sell my gearbox to offset some of the cost.

I hope that it is now just sorting out the rear bearing or shaft in the so called rebuilt box assuming this is the problem in the first place.

Given the problem of finding and fixing the cause of the dreaded vibration I am getting the car to a place in Oxford who deal with the analysing the causes of vibration before spending any more money.

Fingers crossed this will work.

Cheers

Hi Will
The current crop of 5 speed boxes are about ?3k all up, with proper bellhousings and propshafts, no mods or adapter plates needed. Have a look through some of the old postings on 5 speed boxes, there is some interesting stuff, especially from the guy in the US who designed it in the first place!

I'm sure a V12 has been fitted to an early car somewhere, but you'd need the V12 frames, and probably the bonnet, or some extra holes in a S1 bonnet, to get a bit more air in to cool it down. The V8 was a very popular mod in the US for all series of E Types, with a couple of companies selling complete 'kits' to put a V8 in the E.

My S3 is languishing in the garage currently, as my focus has been to complete the restoration on the S1, recover from the bills, then get the S3 back into fine fettle. So I'm probably a year away from doing any mods to it. I doubt very much that I'd put the SUs on the car now, and as I've had the TWR engine rebuilt that would probably be the way to go...but I need to get her back on the road in standard from first, and get her shaken down and running properly again, before taking on any more 'enhancements'.

These are my two, and as you can see, getting onto this forum gave me the kick needed to get one finnished...the black coupe has been at CMC for the past few months, and has just about had the re-trim completed, so isn't too far away from getting back on the road for the first time since the early 70s.

Mark

Green with envy with your E Types your a lucky man.

Trouble is, before spending money on a 5 speed gearbox, I need to get some body work done. In the past she had rear wheelatches done, before I got her, which are starting to bubble up. No doubt a poor job to sell here. The rest of the car isnt too bad but the new bonnet is a poor fit at the scuttle which is hugly dissapointing given the cost of the thing. Not sure what can be done to fix the situation either.

By the way if you need a set of UK Strombergs, to get your OTS back to standard, I have a set you can have including a couple of rebuild kits and new diaphrams.

Now get that black beast on the road.

Cheers
Will
