Look at this S3 for sale.

No price and said to have covered just 10000 miles.

Wrong leather and shades of red.

How do companies like this expect to sell cars when there is no price and no justification. :?

Not to mention crap photos and no description!

It's not as bad as it used to be though. I was working on my S3 at a mates Jag garage maybe 10 years back when a customer turned up in his black S3 OTS. Not a commemorative, just a late black S3.

I got chatting with him, and he told me that he bought the car at the top of the market in 1989, and it owed him quite a lot. I had a good look around it, and the poor old thing was a complete shed. It was pouring oil, water and transmission fluid, and the bodywork was held together with the 30 or so coats of paint. He showed me the invoice he got with the car...sold as seen, tried and approved .... ?89,000.

That was 21 years ago!! We live in more enlightened times...I think.

Truely frightening.

As I look through ads on E Bay and PH etc I see some real horrors and that's visible by photo, I can only imagine how horrible the car would be in the flesh but these owners are still advertising them for strong money.

Not a clue.

I have e-mailed Henderson for the price of this and it is 45k. I did a grand tour last weekend of a few the places around London/ Kent and while looking for an S1/S2, I was starting to get swayed towards the Series 3 V12. It seems to be more within my price bracket 50k

Now come you on Series 3 blokes, Why should I go for the S3?. What is the advantages and what are the pitfalls?

For example what seems to be wrong with the car your post is about?. What should I be looking out for and what should I be looking for.

Well, Tony, the market is a fickle thing. 10 years ago THE E Types to have were the flat floor 3.8 and the V12 S3?both as OTS of course. And as the cars to have, they were of course the most expensive.

The S3 has dropped a little in popularity, and the 4.2 S1 has replaced the early 3.8 in the number 1 position, and I would say that the S3 is now the car to buy.

Firstly, it?s a V12 for goodness sake! The only other V12s of that era are very expensive and temperamental Italian exotics that needed rebuilding every 10,000 miles at a huge cost. The Jaguar V12 has no really bad habits that I know of, and if you get a good one and service it properly it will go on forever.

It is a bit thirstier than the 6 cylinder cars, which if used as an everyday car would be significant, but as a classic used for a few thousand miles a year, just about irrelevant. If you leave the car standing for a few years, the rear crankshaft oil seal will dry out and leak, and it?s a big job to replace a ?5 piece of rope. The carburettors will need an overhaul every 10 years, but that?s not a big deal either.

It?s bigger than the 6 cylinder OTS cars, being built on the 2+2 platform. For me that means comfort as I only just fit into my S1. It has reclining seats, decent brakes and decent cooling, with wider wheels / flared arches and power steering, so there really is little need for any upgrades in these areas.

For some reason that I can?t quite fathom out, they seem to have survived the ravages of rust much better than the S1 or S2. It?s not because they are newer?they are still nearly 40 years old.

Some folks with the early cars say that the S3 is a cruising machine rather than an out and out sports car, but really the wider track and longer wheelbase endows them with superb handling characteristics for the road. On a track they certainly need to be firmed up a little more than the early cars, but I?ve left a few S1 owners behind in a cloud of tyre smoke and un-burnt petrol smoke on the twisty bits!

For most, the chrome grill, the bumper arrangement and the quad exhaust isn?t as ?pure? as the S1, and it certainly is very 70s. However, that is more than made up for by the wider and more aggressive looks, the wonderful sound of the V12, and the amazing torque, power and smooth delivery that only a V12 can deliver.

Why buy a V12 E type ? Well everything Mark has said in the above post but I think the sound these cars make is worth mentioning twice :D

They simply have a sound of their own from the momment the key is turned. combine this with turbine like acceleration, while looking down that fantastic bonnet.

I can't wait to get mine back on the road!!

Tony, as you know these are all at least 35 years old now so look for ROT, and poor workmanship, look even more thoroughly on higher priced cars. Look out for left hand drive cars coverted to right hand drive, nothing wrong with these but remeber there value is at least 10% less than a genuine UK car.

Modified cars can also be a cause for concern. Check the internet and books to see how these cars were equpied when new and the choose for yourself if the modifications carried out are tasteful. To me personally as long as things are done tastefully this does not effect value and some in cases increases value i.e. a six weber carb conversion etc.

The V12 engine is pretty much bullitt proof and runs forever but does not like geting hot. Overheating is the biggest killer of these engines. Back axles are pretty much the same as you would find in all IRS Jags from 61 to 86 (XJ12-93).

Back to the body everything is availabel to repair these cars but at a costs and these costs do tend to grow. I am in the bodywork trade myself and a paint sprayer and if you need any firther advice on the body please feel free to send me a personal message. One last thing the prices are going up.

Cheers Matt.

Well to answer that properly would need a viewing but look at the picture taken side on. The front end is a different colour to the door back.

Auto is not as popular on the 12.

Horrid US whitewall tyre could mean it came from the States????

The V12 is a very silky smooth cruising machine along side a 6 which for some reason just makes you want to grab it by the scuff and drive it.

By the way Tony............E Type UK has just taken in a nice 30,000 mile V12 roadster.

Always worth a look.Low Mileage is key if you ask me since it cannot be replicated.

As usual from the Forum the feedback and information is always very helpful. Vipergts, I was down at Racing Green and they said the V12 it was coming in. It looks and sounds a very nice car. I have been around a lot of dealers in the last 2 weeks, Peter Jarvis, E Types UK, Racing Green, Camberley Marine and Woodmanton Classics.
Series 1 and 2's seem to be quite high prices through a dealer and I suppose they have to make a profit. What I do not understand is why more people are not selling their cars direct, but choose to go to Auction or sell to a dealer.

They would get a much better price selling privately and I would get a better deal as I do not have to make a profit. I suppose I am dreaming a bit and hoping the right car will turn up. I just hope the prices do not go sky high while I am waiting for my retirement next March.

When you say the manual is preferred to the automatic. Is this just preference and more sport feel or is the automatic box a problem?

VIPER GTS You are not too far from me and I am just coming to the end of a 3 year rebuild on My S3 V12 Roadster AUTO. Feel free to have a run out or ask questions. If you leave it while May I should be all taxed and tested

On the Auto manual note I would not have a manual. It begs the question why have all that v12 torque and brake horse and change gear?
