Hi,
Yes it will come out without removing the engine but when I did it I removed the radiator / front water elbow / alternator, released the engine mounts (both sides) & lifted it upwards & forwards, it was a pig of a job.
You will then get enough clearance to get it out but it is an absolute nightmare getting it past the rear chassis mount & don't attempt to do it without a transmission jack as it's really heavy!
If I were doing it again I would definitely support the car off the ground at the front & remove the front horizontal chassis rail (the one the header tank bolts to) & move the engine forwards horizontally 100mm.
Good luck if you decide to do it, why do you want it out?

For clarity when I say 'lift it upwards & forwards' I mean the engine, not the gearbox.
Once the engine is forward far enough to allow the rear of the gearbox to clear the chassis rail the box comes out downwards & backwards.
Whilst it may or not be necessary but when I removed my auto box to facilitate it I also removed the centre console & tunnel cover from the inside.

Hi Rob,
Having fitted both the Getrag 5 Speed (ex XJS 3.6) & then replacing it with the Jaguar 4 Speed (with Laycock Compact A Overdrive) if you can find a bell housing the Jaguar 4 Speed is MUCH easier to fit as everything with the exception of the Gearbox 'Longtail' is OEM.
If you use the XJS 5 speed you will need a different prop, different gearbox mount & the linkage for the gear lever is tricky to get right.
It's definitely worth it but keep the original bits if you have room.
