Hello,

while removing the clock to fix it. I found some homeless cables behind the dashboard.

Any idea how to find out where they belong?

Stefan, probably a process of elimination but I'd start by trying to match the color codes to the wiring diagram. I have found them to be very accurate.

Unfortunately you do not say which car this is, but if it was a 4.2 series 1 for example :

The yellow and light green should come from 1 on the wiper switch, and should connect with a corresponding yellow/green which is connected to a yellow on the wiper motor

The red/white should go to your instrument lighting switch

The purple in all probability goes to your map light switch

The insulated faded brown cable is a bit of a mystery, but will be something to do with the charging system - I imagine that some modification has been made e.g. voltmeter instead of ammeter

There are a lot of lilac cables. Are you sure it should be the map light?

The purple cable has a spade terminal and therefore is likely to be for a switch . Purple cables generally speaking are for auxiliary lights i.e. door operated lights, map lights etc . It is therefore likely to be either for the interior light switch, which is usually at one end of the panel, or for the map light switch, which is usually central next to the light switches. Since your wire is central, the likelihood is that is for the map light switch

That makes sense. Will try it later. What about the red/white one?

Hi Stefan....do you have a wireing diagram.....Purple wire goes to clock....but your clock has probably been changed..as its now battery powered.....this wire is piggybacked from the purple that goes to the interior light switch......red/white....possibly panel light switch

Ah that would make sense for the lilac cable.

Currently the following parts / stuff does not work:
1.) map light does not light when the doors are open - was working before i opened the dashboard
2.) horn itself
3.) panel switch does nothing - but all cables are connected
4.) all instruments stay dark even when the light is switched on

I don't know whether you have reconnected the loose wires, but I am still of the view that

1. the red/white wire probably goes to the panel light switch ( or it could just possibly be for the light in the clock)

2.the purple wire probably goes to the map light switch. The clock on these cars was always battery powered ( 9volt disc type) so I doubt that it was for the clock

@christopher storey: thanks but the lilac cable comes FROM the map light switch.

Right.Well, in that case you need to look for a corresponding purple wire with a bullet terminal. The map light is a festoon type bulb in a spring holder on the underside of the fascia top, so if you can trace the wire back from that it will help

Hi Christopher.....dont know if its the same for all S3 cars but in the S3 wireing diagram i have and the one in the knowledge base the clock is powered by a purple wire that comes from pin 2 of the interior light switch that connects via a fuse to the + side of the battery

Steve : interesting . In that case, since he has disturbed the clock apparently, that presumably is where the wire should lead . It's curious, though, that he has lost the map light since fiddling about with it ! Do you know when they abandoned the battery powered clock which appeared with the new dash on the S2 ?

Christopher, my S2, build date mid August 1969, has the clock powered by the car battery, not a small button battery within the clock.

Geoff : it seems that the button battery must only have lasted for a matter of months then. My early S2 1R1174 is battery rather than car powered, and the batteries only last a year or so - if that - which is a nuisance. Are the later ones the Kienzle type where the clock is mechanical but the winding mechanism is electric ?

Mine is also Aug 69 - 15th. 1R10337 - the clock is also powered from a 12v feed.

As for the map light - the wire is sometimes caught when opening the centre console. As you flip it down it gets pulled out. There should be one wire supplying 12v continuously to the bulb, usually a purple wire going to fuse 3. Is there one or is this the wire that is loose and coming from the Map Light?

Doors connect via a purple-white wires to a 4 way connector. There is also a connection to the Map light bulb and another purple white wire from position 2 on the Map Switch. Pos 3 on the Map Switch connects to ground. Thus when either the switch is used, or either door is opened, there is a path to ground.

You can find this out by testing the wire going to the bulb for either 12v or gnd continuity.
Also the switch. Follow the cable, one goes to ground, the other to the 4 way connector.

you can check this also by checking the switch output for gnd continuity.

This at least should get your map light working. Then we can work out your instrument lights, which as Christopher says, is the red-white wiring. It looks like the red-white wire has come away from the switch at position 1. Did you put the other wire red-white back there or was it already connected?

Christopher, my clock will look the same as yours, just powered by the 12v car battery, how they changed the mechanism I'm not sure. Didn't the Kienzle clocks come in with the S3?

Thanks for all your patience and help. I'm getting closer - probably. Mark the map switch itself is working fine but the map light does not light up while opening the doors.

So here are some new pictures and some more details.

In the center of this picture is the interiour light switch. One lilac green and the right pure lilac cable which goes out of the picture is the one which is not connected. My multimeter showed permanent +12V. The other one is


This one (center) is the map switch. A lilac white and black cable is connected:


I also found this bridge/hub/switch (don't know the correctl english word) where only one red brown cable is connected which does not make sense to me:

Hi Stefan....you really need a wireing diagram...there is one in the knowkedge base section for S3 cars...your last photo shows what i think is the panel lamp switch resistor...in the diagram it shows a red/brown on one side going to the panel lamp switch...and a red/white on the other side
