#1 Glove Box Door

Post by Mark J » Sun Jun 30, 2024 6:49 pm

Hi All,
I am currently converting to RHD, does anyone know
1) What material is used on the wooden insert on the glove box door
2) The restraint is held onto the door with two small screws through the wooden insert into a small metal block on the door, does anyone know how that block was attached to the door, the replacement door doesn’t have one.
Thanks
Mark

The wooden insert (looks pre-covered here) may well glue in place as there doesn’t seem to be separate screws for it:

Its just a piece of piywood, minimal glue, mostly held on by the latch. Covered by black velvet on a cloth underlay. Note the door handle screws are just into the plywood. if yr making this, might be opportunity to build a stronger handle connection ...

The metal block seems to be somehow stamped/riveted to the lid. Maybe a spot weld process although I can't see heat marks. Whatever, it is definitely part of the metal fabrication process, not possible to attach in this manner after the vinyl covering. Imo the part you buy should have this block.

Thanks for the picture, I am going to try to file off the corners and see if I can remove it, and then attach it to the new door.
Any clue as to the black material?????
Mark

What black material, the velvet cloth on the wooden insert or the black vinyl covering on the metal ? What do you want to know, what it is or where to get it? Interior trimmers/upholsters could show you the closest that is available today, it’s what I did.

Note the original vinyl (on the metal) is not reinforced, means it’s quite thin and (I guess) may have been originally heated and pressed. Modern material from upholsterers is reinforced, cloth backed, so its thicker, can be too thick for the clearance that is required between the door and the panel. I’ve read posts claiming to have stripped off the reinforcing in order to achieve the required clearance. I got lucky, got away with it by micro adjustments to everything.

My LHD to RHD conversion, the RHD panels were from an S2, means I don’t know if the differences are because of the series or the market (LHD/RHD). Original (LHD S3) had a tyre details plaque on the inside of the glove box lid; the replacement (RHD, S2) doesn’t. And the replacement (S2, RHD) glove box lid has a funky flush fitting “nut” for one of the door handle screws, making it a lot stronger than the original (S3 LHD) s/tap screws into plywood.
