#1 GM TH 400 Auto box - Series 3 Etype

Thinking of converting my BW12 Auto equipped series 3 to 4 speed GM 400. Anyone with experience? Is it a worthwhile mod from a driving point of view?

Can't comment on the improvements, but John's Cars in Dallas, Texas uses the 700R4 transmission for his XJ conversion kits. His notes on the E page say he's considering a kit for the V12. Definitely a source for some of the required parts like the adapter plate.

Note that the GM400 is a 3 speed, not 4. The 4L60 and 4L80 are 4 speeds. The 4L80E is what Jaguar used for the 6.0 V12 cars, but it has a different bolt pattern than a 5.3 HE block, which I believe is also different from a 5.3 pre HE block.

The 4L80E is a big transmission, I doubt it would fit in an E Type. It's also a lot more than you need, it was used by GM in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and motorhome chassis up to 20,000 lbs.

The Daimler limo used the Turbo Hydramatic behind the 4.2 inline 6 with an adapter plate. Great transmission with the variants used with the V12 XJS and sedans until the last V12, XJR 306 supercharged 6.

The 4L80E is what I have in my X306 XJR6 with the AJ16 4 litre supercharged engine.

I installed a GM 4L60e behind the 7.2L V8 in my Jensen Interceptor (which has since been upgraded to high compression pistons). I did have an upgrade kit fitted to it purchased from Monster Transmissions.

The "non-ecu" standard 4L60 would be a perfect choice for the S3 V12 and I have also wondered if it would fit. Just imagine doing 2000rpm at 120km/h (75mph)....
Best Regards
Philip
