#1 USA over riders
Does anyone know if the massive rubber over riders on Series 3 front bumpers are legal in UK or do they need to be replaced?

Other than being a public health hazard (causing outbreaks of gagging, at E-type gatherings only) they are perfectly legal. The 73s are bearable but the 74s call for a hacksaw at the first opportunity, except that the rears have substantial extra structures under the boot floor.

Take a look at David Lacey's website for how to deal with the front bumpers without losing the functionality of the extra protection offered. At the rear, you may need to drill out some spot welds to release the rear cradle. Your new rear over riders will sit about 1" away from where the Euro spec ones do, but no one will notice. Without the stainless steel finishers it'll look a bit like this. You'll need some grommets to fill in the various left over screw holes.
My car was once like yours. Personally I long for day a half-rusty dog-ugly 1974 US s3 scores higher marks than a polyurethane painted faux s1 made from the usual reproduction parts at the local concours competition, but I suspect that will never happen.
kind regards
Marek

I got rid of my US train bumpers at the front as well. Made my own version of how I think they should look, but the rear set up with the added strength had some appeal to me because of the added protection in case of a low speed rear end collision.
I basically shortened the huge rubber buffers and had them painted in body color.
Each to his own, here is mine.
PS: Marek's covered headlights and grey lenses.

Looks quite nice - I didn't realise it was such a job to change them over all the fittings are different - David Lacey is suggesting new blades as well.
