#1 SNG Ignition System problems

Post by JJC » Sun Feb 24, 2019 8:22 pm

Hello all Series 3 owners; If you have the latest from SNG.....this ever happen ? Driving along, no problem, and engine shuts down, will crank, but not restart ?? Ever happen ? Coil is new, amplifier only 2 years old, all wires fresh, new plugs, strong battery, distributor in great shape ......suggestions ? Engine temperature not a part of the problem...can happen hot or cold. Love to hear a solution. Thanks.

JC

If it just cuts.out then loose wire somewhere (or a dry solder joint somewhere) . If it coughs and splutters as it dies then fuel supply issues....

Not fuel. Just stops, no longer a spark , all wires tight, nothing loose. Most components in the SNG system new, or relatively new. Looking for an owner with same ignition who had similar problem.

Thanks for trying to help.

Are you sure it's not an ignition switch fault ? A dead cut sounds suspiciously like a complete instantaneous loss of voltage , rather than a systemic fault which in my experience often causes misfiring, backfiring etc before it gives up the ghost . I should trace 12v throughout the system next time it happens

These may be helpful?
Kirby Palm's tome (pages 153-157) includes owner experiences and troubleshooting tips for CEI/AB14 ignition system which is what the SNG system is?

Also, here is Jaguars tests to check this ignition amplifier:

Hi - I had what seems to be a similar problem.
First trial: Connect a cable between the positive of the battery and the positive terminal of the ignition coil. If the engine starts and runs OK then the problem lies with the ignition system between the ignition switch and the coil.
I had purchased a new ignition switch harness from SNGB (part number C35845) and the car suddenly stopped running a few months after I'd fitted it. One of the wires (white/yellow if I recall correctly) on the back of the ignition switch side of the harness had come adrift due to poor soldering. Easy to fix by removing the harness and re-soldering the connection.
If that's not the problem, then there's a poor/broken connection elsewhere in that part of the circuit.
Hope that may help and please let us know.
Good luck
Chris
