Hi All

I'm having problems with the charging system on my S3.

The engine has been out for the last 18 mths, charging system was working fine before engine removal but now everything is back together- nothing but the red warning light.

From the below post I've tested all the prescribed links and everything has good connections.

There's good battery voltage at the alternator B terminal

Just 2v across the control box +ve and -ve terminals...?

I'm stuck. Has anybody ant suggestions for a next step, or do I just give up and visit an autoelecrician?

Unless you want to keep everything original, why not just fit a modern alternator.
very easy to fit and no problems constantly checking and vetting old components.
After doing all the other jobs on the car I just decided I just wanted to just to drive and enjoy the car and this seemed the easy option.

Ok, I take your point but after 1500 hours input and a change of working circumstances (new business venture)
I just want to jump in and cruise! i have kept all the original parts though.

You might want to charge some suspicious connections, especially the low current ones like the brush connections on the generator itself.
FYI, I have a low glowing charge (ign) light even when the voltmeter is indicating 14 volt on the battery (verified with a Fluke DVM)

Sorted!

In the end I went to a local auto electrician who checked everything, cleaned the brushes and adjusted the earth connection through the cable holder and hay presto everything is working fine.
