#1 Ticking noise disappearing when engaging clutch

I have 1973 S3 roadster.
I am noticing a ticking noise when the car is in gear, not very load. If I engage the clutch, the noise disappears. Depressing the clutch, taking out of gear and then releasing when travelling the noise doesn't return. The ticking increases with revs, not road speed and only when in gear.
So I think that rules out the propshaft, diff, any suspension or wheel.
The ticking seems to be in any gear.
I am guessing the cause will be spigot bearing or gearbox related rather than the clutch.
Any ideas, am I on the right track thanks.

Hello Dave,
In your following statement
I am noticing a ticking noise when the car is in gear, not very load. If I engage the clutch, the noise disappears.
does "engage the clutch" mean that the clutch pedal is not depressed? My interpretation of an engaged clutch is that the friction surfaces are transmitting the drive from the engine through to the Gearbox. With that interpretation, the two sentences in your paragraph above seems contradictory.
Do you hear the noise when the car is stopped, engine running, Gearbox in Neutral and the clutch engaged (clutch pedal not depressed)?
Regards,
Bill

Sorry when I say engaged = when I depress the pedal.
There is no noise when the car is stopped, out of gear.

Does it go away when the car is warmed up? I.e is it there when you head off but not when you return? That was what mine did, I ignored it, until it stopped going away ...

It seems to be there all the time ie when cold and warm.

Bad news is, I never found the cause. Car is in very many tiny little bits atm, If the noise is still there after I've put it back together .... I will not be impressed.

Hello Dave,
Generally, if there is no noise with the car stopped, engine running, gearbox in neutral and the clutch engaged (clutch pedal not depressed) then the issue is not with the gearbox. In this situation, all of the same internal components are rotating as when the gearbox is in gear and the car moving, except that that the Synchro Hubs are not engaged and there is no load on any gear.
Synchro Baulk Rings can rattle, but this issue is normally apparent in the condition above (stopped car etc.).
Is the noise still there with the gearbox in a forward gear, clutch engaged (clutch pedal not depressed) car traveling, when it overruns, ie, that transition from load on gears to no load; typically when you power up a hill and back off just as you go over the crest?
Regards,
Bill
