#1 Fuel

At a recent classic car event a guy suggested that adding a small amount of 2 stroke oil to the E5 petrol creates a better and fuller burn . Anyone heard this before and does it improve performance ?

Not heard of this but people used to drop a bit of Castrol R into the fuel to get that genuine “racer” smell!
Series 1 FHC purchased 40 years ago. Courted my wife in it.
Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.

Unlikely to improve the burn. 2 stroke oil is intended not to burn well so it lubricates the engine...probably all you will get is blue haze. Interestingly in this week's classic car weekly there is a piece by Fuzz Townshend and he subjectively thinks his pre war Austin ran better on E10 than E5.
Don't forget that E10 means up to 10% ethanol. All the pump marks were changed on Sept 1st but chances are a lot of fuel is still E5 until the petrol station is refilled and the existing base stock in the system becomes E10....I suspect a lot.of what is sold as E10 now is probably still E5....probably by Oct it will be approaching E10....

Can you still buy Redex…..I have an original Redex gun that my Grandfather had at his garage petrol pumps. 1 squirt per gallon of petrol, if I remember right. A good suggestion if you can still buy it.

I have certainly bought redex within the last 3 or 4 years - it came from most accessory stores in 500ml or 1 litre bottles

“A shot of redex, sir?” Something from the distant past. A bit like sitting in the barbers and hearing “anything for the weekend, sir?”

The idea of putting 2 stroke oil in the duel comes from modern common rail diesels with tight tolerance high pressure injection pumps. These pumps have extremely high tolerances and are lubricated buy the diesel - they cannot handle any impurities in the fuel like water and if the pump looses lubrication if fails.'

The logic is that the 2 stroke oil provides additional lubrication for the pump, particularly with low sulphur diesel and if it sucks in a sip of water the 2 stroke may provide enough lubrication for the high pressure fuel pump to survive the event.

My Wife’s BMW Mini Cooper seems to run better on E10. The engine definitely feels more flexible.
