#1 S3 Wiper Motor

Post by koala » Thu Dec 09, 2021 2:54 pm

I would like to replace the wiper motor on my S3 LHD (LUCAS 75700A).

It could be rebuild but I found a 75680 from an RHD. It looks similar. I would like to know if an RH version could easily replace the original one. I think only have to set up the parking position. I am right ?

Thanks for your help.

Yes you can use that motor but you will need the right drive gear to suit your model - so take the one out of the old motor if possible.

Hello François,
To go from RH to LH configuration, or visa versa, you don't have to change any of the gear set, just the orientation of the external crank.

Bill

Yep, found that out the expensive way. For my L2R conversion I bought a so-called RHD gear, found it to be exactly the same as the LHD gear, all I needed to do was to put the crank on the other way.

You will need LHD wiper arms. I've failed 2 attempts to buy RHD ones. First attempt, I was sent new LHD ones. Waited too long before discovering this so I just wore it. 2nd attempt they were RHD but, when I eventually tried to fit them, were the wrong length. ?@#$%^&*!!

Once I've removed the old wiper motor I noticed the wiper mechanism could not move. Wiper arms stay still on the windscreen. I was expecting the mechanism to move freely if i pull it. I think I have first to fix this issue before installing a new engine and overheat it again.
Is there some tips to access to the mechanism easily or is it a pain in the ass as I think ? :hammerdrill:

You got it right, not the easiest job. However I would hazard a guess that you don't need to. Are you trying to move it by pulling on the wipers? That wouldn't work. at the end of the stroke (park position) the wipers are changing direction, they are effectively "mechanically locked". The motor can move the mechanism but the wipers cannot.

I've just received the new wiper motor built in 1984. Obviously it is exactly the same as the 75700A. Same park switch peg and mounting clip. The former drive gear moved with a 100 degrees arc.

As the wipers may be at the park position I would like to be right at the first try putting back the gear assembly in the gearbox casing. I guess the park cam on hidden side of the gear should be close to the peg. Is there more tips I should know in order to put the gear in the correct position ? Thanks.

Moving that little plastic plug thing to the other side changes the direct that the wipers first move when u turn them on, i.e. u are LHD, 1st movement u want them to sweep right. Easy way to check, before u reinstall the motor, connect it to a battery ...
After u have installed the motor, before u switch it on, take off the wiper blades. Switch on, confirm the direction and then switch off, the motor will stop in the park position. Then reinstall the wipers exactly as you want them to be when they are parked. Retest, repos'n the wipers as req'd.
