Dear forum colleagues,

i have read a lot of posts concerning conversion to a spin on oil filter.
Originally I wanted to keep the original parts but yesterday I found that the previous owner of my car didn‘t mount an oil filter. He has thrown out everything including spring, washers etc. (obviously he didnt like filtration at all beacaue he also removed the fuel filter )

So now I thing about converting to the spin on system

There are so many companies who can provide this I‘m now confused which one to choose.
CoolCat has a reasonable price, SNG looks nice….

Can you give me some advice from your experience?
1.) would you recommend a conversion (I think yes)
2.) which supplier is recommended

I got fed up with trying to stop oil leaks from the original oil filter arrangement. I replaced it with the Rob Beere Racing version. No problem fitting it and no leaks since. Very satisfied.

I run the CoolCat spin on conversion, not because there is anything wrong with the stock system per se, but because a spin on conversion gave me the choice of filter media via different brands and types of spin on filters.

A spin on conversion from any one of the known and reputable suppliers should be fine.

I run a Canton Mecca filter with replaceable 8 micron rated filter elements. Very much like the factory set up in concept, but with higher flowing and better filter media. Also allows for internal inspection of the filter at every oil change (just like the factory set up).

I also have the coolcat, its good.
Never had any problems with the original, just that the paper filters had to be imported. Also I was dubious about the QC of the aftermarket cartridges now available.

Most spin-on filters incorporate blocked filter bypass and anti drain back valves. Paper cartridges don't have these, instead these functions are designed into the filter housing, makes cartridge systems more expensive for the car manuf'r. However I read somewhere, paper cartridges are making a comeback as we become more environmentally conscious.

When you retrofit a Coolcat spin-on filter conversion, you end up with duplicate blocked filter bypasses, the one in the spin-on filter as well as the original that is designed into the oem filter housing. I.e as per this diag. There is not duplicate ADBV's because the there was never one originally, not required because the filter is the lowest part of the oil system...

Even though the oem blocked filter bypass is duplicated, you still need it. If the PO has removed it, leaving just a hole, all oil will go via this hole, nothing will go via the filter. Here is pic of the blocked filter bypass, this pic is from the Coolcat installation instructions. If the valve is missing, imo the least you should do is block the hole and rely on the bypass that is built into the spin-on filter.

I have ordered the coolcat adapter now.

Until it arrives I want to use the original system.
No I‘m wondering if the picture in the parts catalogue is correct that the rubber seal 12905 has to be put under the screw head. I think it should be between the washer and the canister.
What is correct?

Or do the aftersales parts available today have a too big outer diameter
It looks to me that it should be placed in the bore of the washer.

Definitely as you interpret, between the canister and the washer, in the bore of the washer: Wouldn't seal otherwise. SNGBs illustration is better.

Hello dear forum colleagues,

so today I received the spare parts for my oil filter canister from a well known big german parts supplier.

Never having seen how the original parts look I tried to mount the filter assy.
After half an hour under my car I realized that it is impossible to mount the assy to the engine.
Spring and washer have a too big diameter and won‘t fit into the bore of the aluminum conus.
The filter can‘t be presssed deep enough into the canister.

Wonderful. Even the inner diameter of the washer was wrong so I had to drill it to 11mm.

So now I have spent money and time and only have parts which won‘t fit.

I hope that I am right that the spring should fit in the aluminum „cup“.

Now I will wait for the coolcat parts to arrive.

Spring is 19 mm diameter, 35 mm long. Cup is 44.5 mm diameter, pressed steel, 0.6 mm thick.

I have grinded the washer to a 19mm diameter and could finally press the spring into the cup. The spare part is machined from aluminium.
So now the filter is mounted and I can wait for the coolcat part.
