#1 Relay position.

Post by Norton » Sat Jan 29, 2022 5:00 pm

Hi.
-73 S3 manual.
Working on removing gearbox and in the process I discowered two relays, and I wonder what they are.

One below RH airfilter, inside of battery and a/c receiver drier. Four connectors, Photo 1.

Another on RH side of transmission tunnel, just fwd of gear selector. It have three connectors. Photo 2.

Belive they are not flasher unit or emergency flasher unit, but where are they located?

Thanks, Harald.

One near the battery is the horn relay, I don’t have the relay near the transmission tunnel but I think if you have aircon on your car it is for that.

The indicator/flasher can units are indoors, under the dash. The main one is by the dip switch.

You can identify relays by looking at the wiring colours and reconciling them to the wiring diagram. It sounds like you were describing the horn relay, which will have big thick purple/yellow wires on one of its terminals.

kind regards
Marek

Hi Harald
I assume your car is US specification; the relay inside belongs to the seat belt warning system (see attachment)
Best regards

Thank you you all.
It is indeed horn relay and seat belt warning. SBW system is long gone but relay remains. ( should have mentioned it is a us car ). It is easy enough to check out when you have the answer.

Aircon relay is on lh wing, just inside brake fluid reservoir. Also a relay on lh top of radiator shroud to start cooling fans when aircon is on.

Going through parts lists I found an «ignition relay». Can’t find it on wiring diagram. Is there such a relay?

Rgda Harald.

Thanks. Should have thought that one out. I have thougt about that relay as «start relay». Somewhat annoying that same item have different names in different publications.
