#1 Mystery heat shield

Post by lowact » Mon Apr 04, 2022 11:50 am

Does anyone recognise this? Its a small heat shield removed from under one of my 1972 US S3 exhaust manifolds, not sure now what it was shielding, didn't take much notice at the time because I didn't expect I would be reusing it ...
Its NOT one of the engine mount shields.

Hello Colin,
That looks like the heat shield that protects the engine mounts.

Regards,

Bill

I expect it'll be to protect the starter motor. The one for the xjs is like a three sided box.
kind regards
Marek

Ok, thanks, I think it must have been for the starter motor, it’s not for the engine mounts. Except I had the later closed type of starter, which does not have such a shield in the parts manual.

Was a shield nevertheless original equipment for the later starters? It is fibrous material same as all the other oem shields, not metal. I can’t remember how it was mounted.

I’ve fitted one of those miniature geared starters which shouldn’t need shielding as it leaves plenty of room. It has significantly better performance (higher speed, less voltage drop) however I am not overly confident about its durability so I am allowing for the possibility that in future I may have to revert to the oem starter despite that, with 134 tooth flywheel and HE compression, it struggles when battery charge is low.

Shield assembly, C35781, is comprised to two parts. The part you display is riveted to a frame. The frame is attached above the starter motor, protecting it from exhaust heat. You're missing the frame.
