#1 Series 3 Re-Build photos
I have opened a photobucket account and put my series 3 E Type re-build photos to date into it. Car has currently just had undercoat applied and will get top coats and laquer over the next 10-14 days. Hopefully will be on the road early-mid April.

Dear Philipe,
Thanks for your comments. I will post more pictures when it is at the next stage. Hopefully it should be ready in the next 3/4 weeks. It was started on Jan 1st this year. So about three months in total. Not too bad going but I have had more than a bit of help as I am not completely reliable with a spanner and screwdriver. I need lots of supervision !!
Whilst stripping the car I did find a reference number on the rear valence behind the bumper. 4S 5269 I have attached a picture below.
Cheers
Mike

Thank you Mike,
this is the body N?.
Very impressive work in 3 months, you must have been really busy and worked very hard to get so far ! even with help and supervision.
I like your hardtop, is it an original one? I always find they look very good on the S3 OTS.

Yes Philipe, it is an original. I managed to talk to the very first owner. I tracked him down from the Heritage Certificate. It was registered in the name of a Company and that Company still exists and the person who owned the car is still a Director of the Company. He confirmed that the hard top was supplied new with the car as an optional extra. However, when he bought the car new the hardtop was black. I am thinking of painting it back to black as it is currently the same colour as the car.
Cheers

Good for you ! nice to have an original hardtop and also be able to get the history of the car while having contact with the first owner.
If it was mine I would also paint it black not only to get it back to the original colour but I also like the combination.
Just like the original press car featured on period magazine covers and road tests

Where exactly did you find the body number tag - do you have a pic zoomed out that shows where the tag is with also the the full body in the pic??
I have my rear bumpers off - in fact there is no trim on the rear of the car and it is stripped back to bare metal and I cannot find my tag anywhere. It is not on the rear number plate panel.
Thanks
Garry

Hi Garry,
The Body Number Tag on my car was fixed with two pop rivets on the rear panel just to the left of the right hand rear lamp housing.
If your car has had this panel replaced at some time then there is every chance that the repairers may not have transferred the tag onto the new panel.
Good luck with your restoration.

Garry,Where exactly did you find the body number tag ?
the body N? is appearing on a small embossed aluminium plate and is riveted behind the rear license plate bracket on 1974 US-Canada models and behind the stainless steel trim (under the rear bumper) on 71-73 US-Canada models and 71-74 UK models.
Mine was located as Mike's one.
all the best

Thanks for those comments. So I take it that in the pic below the two holes near the drivers side rear light fitting is where the tag used to be. It was not there when I took my panels off so I guess the rivets corroded through and it has fallen off. Does anyone make the blanks so I can get another one.

Garry,
That looks to be it. If you look carefully you can still see the outline of where the tag used to be. It is more likely that when the car was re-painted in the past someone has removed the tag as there is no sign of the rivets either. I am sure someone must be able to make a new one up, they were only stamped. Have you got the body number. If not you can apply to JDHT for a Heritage Certificate and it will give you all the information on the car when it left the factory. Engine Number, Gearbox Number, Chassis Number, Body Number, First Owner, Original Registration, Supplying Dealership.
Mike.

Thanks Mike - car had original paint and I have the certificate and other information. I suspect bimetallic corrosion has taken the rivets away and the tag fallen away. The firewall plate is OK but needs refurbishment and the number is stamped in the firewall barely readable under the paint.
I will see if I can get another tag.

AFAIK no one makes blanks for body numbers . Also, I am afraid you cannot get additional information on numbers from a Heritage Certificate - JDHT will only confirm the numbers you give to them , so as to prevent people cloning authentic cars by merely stating a chassis no at random and getting all the information without actually having the car

#15 Rear Tag
I too found a crumbling body tag in the same position on my car...a LHD European spec car (first exported and registered in Switzerland in 1971).
The body tag should read 4S52334 and here is the photo of it as found:

But I also found a bit of masking tape on the reverse side of the dash wich had the body number and the words 'SWISS' written in biro (now faded).

If your interested in seeing the rest of the car I've been adding to the restoration story here:
http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0[/img]
If anyone is getting a tag made up then I'll need one too...even though it's hidden when the car goes back together, at least I'll know it's there.
Cheers
Peter
