#1 What is the correct finish for engine bay balance pipes

Post by Holeshot » Wed Jul 19, 2023 3:53 pm

Hello chaps.

I’m about to refresh the engine bay and am wondering if anyone knows the correct finish for the steel balance pipes running over the top of the engine.
I naively thought they were zinc plated but wanted to check whether they are tin plated instead….or anything else for that matter!!

Thanks 🙂

The reference I used to post my reply is
Jaguar V-12 E-Type: A Guide to Authenticity
by Richard T Russ

I will likely provide more info than you asked for - trying to anticipate follow up questions

Oil lines for oil pressure gauge and banjo bolts (C32445) - Bright Cadmium
Throttle pedestal - cast aluminum (C34260)
Connecting rods for throttle - Bright Cadmium (C34419 x2 and C35841 x2)
Breather Plumbing (horseshoe-shaped lines connecting carbs (C34632 & C34924)and T's off to breather on front of head (C32927)- Yellow Cadmium
Balance Pipe (thick tube arching over engine; connects inlet manifolds) (C12345) - depends on year of Jag) - Yellow Cadmium
Air Pump Plumbing (gulp valve bracket (C34469) and tube to air cleaner (C35086) - Bright Cadmium
Air Pipe (long skinny pipes on common tube injecting air into head (C35775/74) - Bright Cadmium
Battery fold Down Bracket (C34918) - Gloss Black Paint

What did I miss?

Wow Craig!

You missed nothing! Thank you very much 😁

It does raise a question though as mine is a UK model and the items the article says should be yellow cad plated I’m sure would be the same as the throttle linkage ie. bright cadmium. I only say this as the original finish on mine is definitely not yellow. Maybe this has something to do with yellow cad being used on US models?

Must say tho, looks quite eye catching in yellow.

Thanks,
Hilton.

Yes definitely not yellow cad on UK cars - I have that book signed by Richard himself and it is a great book but you need to be aware it primarily deals with US cars but he does often highlight differences in the text.
