#1 6 cylinder in a series 3?

Hi, I recently bought my sixth e-type. It is a 1971 Series 3, 2+2. It has not run in 40+ years. I know that Jaguar made several early Series 3 cars with 6 cylinder 4.2 engines. Just curious, but what would be involved in installing a 4.2 into an existing V12 car? I am just getting ready to begin pulling my engine and thought I would explore other options. Any thoughts? Thanks! Jim

An engine change needs to be notified to DVLA and probaby end up on a Q plate and lose its historic status and a lot of value

Ascot Fawn shows a US location, if that’s correct then the DVLA will not be involved.
However, why try all the complication of fitting a straight six if a V12 with HSE (?) head will give all the wonderful torque and flexibility loved by S3 owners and improve the fuel consumption to closer to 4.2 straight six levels? And be a far easier fit.

Just my thoughts

I see a US flag in his profile....but we have plenty of members who show their nationality with a flag but not necessarily their location....and he does refer to E type rather than XKE...anyway good info for others...or if he wants to export :bigrin:

Pretty much nobody here will have experience or have even seen one of the few s3 etypes fitted with an xk engine. I'd suggest you scour the web, including xkedata.com, and take a look at the engine bay of the four or six (can't remember) s3 etypes with xk engines. After that, look at some late s2 engine bays.

If you start with s3 engine frames, then you are going to want to see how the earlier xk engine mounts and is held in the s3 frames. Other than that, there is little exciting going on.

kind regards
Marek

Marek,

Not only have I seen one, I have driven one. I recounted the experience here:

I'm really interested in hearing the motivation for doing so. WHY???

A V12 has only two main issues that need attention:
Ignition;
Cooling

Both sorted very easily, and rather inexpensively, with definitely far less effort than would be required to fit an XK engine in there.
