#1 Recommendations pls - BW12 Auto Box Rebuild

Post by TMC29L » Tue Jun 25, 2024 6:31 pm

Hello all,
I’m looking for recommendations for an automatic trans specialist who will refurbish my E Type’s BW12 at a reasonable price.

G Whitehouse quoted £2,750 + vat which just seems like a lot. I was anticipating around £1,500.

There is one that advertises in JEC magazine and on eBay that quotes £895. Has anyone used them or can anyone recommend anyone else that they have used?

Thanks.

Hi Dominic,

I did a BW8 (which is similar to the BW12) for a customer recently;
it depends on the condition of your box.
If yours is worn and many parts are shot (eg brake drum, valve block, bent sump, etc), the quote from Whitehouse seems reasonable (they do a dyno test to check everything).
895 is less than the parts alone for a complete rebuild (its not just the bands, clutches and seals, but bearings, bushes, the oil pump,...).
I would go for a "as new" gearbox without the risk of having to do it twice, which is even more expensive.
You could save on the rebuild cost of the torque converter, just shop around.
