Remote Mirror Headaches

Anyone out there using the remote control mirror as used on the later SIII? It seems that now matter how I adjust mine, the best I can get is a view of the side of my car. once I have moved it to the max vertical, it starts going down as I move it to the left. I'm 6'2" so that has something to do with the lack of vertical movement up, but even scrunching down in the drivers seat, I still cannot see the road behind me, just the lower side of my car.

Has anyone tried SNG's aftermarket mirror assembly? PN BD41463/1 Described as:

Door Mirror assembly, adjustable - Flat Glass. This mirror has a wider angle of movement compared to the standard BD41463 for USA spec vehicles.

I'd like to hear from anyone that has one. Maybe that would fix my problem.

I think you have a parts mismatch between the cable and the mirror. I'm pretty certain the one for the etype will superficially look identical to that for an xj12/xj6 of that time period, but small geometry differences in the cable length will will render them not quite compatible enough, e.g. the screw in nipple on the end of the cable may not be for that car or something like that.

I'd start first by seeing if the mirror can ever be bent round to where you want it to go and take it from there.

If all else fails, a workaround may be to remount the mirror glass "not flat flush" in the body/housing, but on a wedge of cheese shaped plate between the glass and the mechanism in the body.

I am 6' 3" and mine is OK, also for my 5' 7" wife, so an adjustment thing maybe? I think I have a couple of spares if you need pictures of anything.

I think you're absolutely right! The more I look into this I'm finding quite a few different part numbers for what all look like the same mirror assembly. BD40822, BD41463, and BD43300. All with various /X versions for flat vs convex and who knows what else. Does anyone have a definitive answer for what the correct part number is for the E-Type application? U.S. driver's side(Left), flat. Moss says BD40822/2, Welsh says BD43300, and SNG says none of these are appropriate for an E-Type, only XJ models.

I think those are going to be all of the standard "Tex" mirrors. The remote control mirror was an optional extra so ought to appear in the final two pages of the 1974 Parts Manual. It's shown on the index microfiche page, but when you follow that up and look at the actual page.....it's missing. Perhaps it might be worth looking in the Technical Service bulletins.

Another approach would be to look at the parts numbers for the xj mirrors from their Parts Manuals and thus eliminate them from the hunt.

I checked the SPB and there is no mention of mirrors. The illustrated SPC is all there is on mirrors, the options page does not mention remote mirrors. I think you are correct, these were probably XJ remote operated mirrors fitted retrospectively to the S3.

After much digging, I found "SERVICE INFORMATION" VOL 1 NO. 4 dated June, 1972, item 49, subject Remote Controlled Mirror. This document lists part number BD.40822, Assembly door mirror remote control.

So, now it's official, this is the part number I'll be looking for and since SNG lists an improved version of this, I've just placed an order for one. We'll see how this works out!

Good luck on this, Steve. Is it possible you have a replacement mirror already installed?
I posted on this topic, same problem, on June 19 of last year. I ordered a mirror part number #BD40822F/1 from SNG because I was told it was correct for US cars. I could only see the lower rear quarter of the car in it and sent it back. Fortunately I was able to repair the broken adjustment stalk of my original mirror. So far I haven't found a mirror from any vendor that says it's correct for a Series 3.
