#1 Gearstick gaiter

Post by lowact » Thu May 14, 2026 12:39 am

When I 1st dismantled my console, I found the gear stick gaiter was glued into it. I suspect this would not have been how it was originally done? Instead, I now just glue the gaiter into its retainer, i.e:

The retainer sits on the gearbox tunnel cover (it can’t drop down) and is restrained into this position by the console, without being attached to it. For me the big advantage is that I can remove and replace the console without having to remove my larger OD gearstick knob including the OD switch:

Some subtle trimming of the console helped; the left side is trimmed to 70 cm:

Also the hand brake slot is extended to 30 cm from the rear.
I also made the gaiter longer, so I could concertina it as shown; with this arrangement there is no distortion or stretching of the gaiter irrespective of the gear selection.
