#1 Gearbox number confusion

Hi everyone, I’ve applied to get a heritage certificate for my recently purchased series 3 roadster. They have come back questioning my gearbox number stating that it may have been misread. It looked pretty clear to me but the last digit may not be fully stamped. I’ve attached a picture of the plate. Does anyone have any ideas about the gearbox number being something different than KL6690?

I read it as a "5".

Could very well be. Might be a case of can’t see the forest for the trees-been looking at it for too long..

Excellent question. I can’t get to the car until Wednesday and will then have a look. Newbie question-can you see the gb number easily?

You asked: "Newbie question-can you see the gb number easily?"

Here is my origoinal tranny fresh from the tunnel. Note the clean area on the right side of the tranny in the photo:

That stamping is on the cover of the tranny.
Getting to it will likely involve removing the tunnel cover or a lucky stab with a mirror on a hinged stick.

It is also stamped on the body of the tranny case:

The red arrow is pointing to the proper side/edge of the case, but the actual location is much closer to the shifter.
Both location will likely need cleaning or oil/grease/crud to get to legible readings.

And the winner is britsobits. It is a 5. I found other documents from previous owners that confirmed.
Thanks for your input.

Interesting site, thanks. The Chassis number you used is not mine - mine is 1S2346 and this shows a left hand drive silver car last seen in 2012 or thereabouts. Their database is incorrect. Mine is a RHD, red and has been in Australia for over 30 years.

Hi....yes I re looked at your data plate photo....xkedata is based on owners adding their own info and anyone else that sees cars for sale etc adding....so mistakes can happen.....there is a lot more entries and info for S1/2 cars......S3 not so much.....Steve
