Series 3 air filter bolts.

Hello.

I am finally at the stage with my project where I (think) I am ready for the first MOT!!! The only thing left is to put the air filters back on but I dont have the bolts that I need to do so. My usual parts people want to charge a small fortune for them but I'd rather just go to my local bolt shop and get some simple ones fer a fraction of the price.

My question is can anyone tell me the thred pitch of these bolts (screws)? Or alternatively somewhere that would sell me some for a reasonable price!

Thanks in advance, maybe I'll be taking her for her first spin in years before 2012.

Do you mean the hollow bolts securing the filter cases to the carbs through the linked vent castings (C38152-8) or the special sleeve type bolts that screw into them to secure the lids (C34350)? They are both 'specials' which are probably not replaceable by anything the fastener place will have, unless you get very creative with studding and tubing and long nuts? The former will be UNC into carb alloy and UNF for the steel threads. With very few exceptions the on all E-types fasteners are UNC into aluminium and UNF into ferrous (or for simple bolt/nut combinations).

Parts that are not 'off the shelf' fasteners have to be custom made in batches, usually taking some time before they sell enough even to break even, let alone reap a reward. To make them at cheaper unit cost they'd have to make more at a time, which for a low volume part would just mean it would take them even longer to go into profit on the exercise.

Before you comment too adversely on the people who make, stock, catalogue and despatch low-volume custom parts for your car, try specifying, drawing, tendering and commissioning them yourself and see how dirt cheap the sellers are in comparison.

Sorry, the first part number was C38152-8 . I see that by putting the above number in brackets our dear forum software interprets a number 8 followed by a closing brackt ) as a sun-glasses smiley.

Thanks for the fast and informative responses, very useful.

I hadnt realised they were quite so complex, this would explain the cost. I was hoping that a simple fixing was used and I could just "stick 'em on"!

Maybe I'll just treat her to a nice new shiny set after all.
