#1 Correct Rear Wheel Hub

When I lived in the UK I purchased my E-type in very late Autumn. A couple of months later in the middle of winter I backed my car out of the drive on a dull morning and when I started down the road there was a rattling coming from the rear end - it stopped at higher speeds. After a lot of searching I took off the passenger side rear wheel hub cap and inside was the hub nut with the threaded piece of hub still in the nut. All I can assume is that the nut had been over torqued in the summer and when winter came along and got cold it finally broke.

Any way I put it into a local garage to get fixed and collected it a day later and all seemed OK.

Many years later I noticed that the rear hubs of my car were different - I can only assume they could not get the correct part and used a hub off another jag model of some sort.

This is the pic of the drivers side hub and the one I assume is correct. Notice the hub ring in the centre.

This is the passenger side hub and the one I assume is dodgy - can any one please clarify and if know what model jag this hub is off. Note there is no centre hub ring. Hasn't impacted on drivability and I will be changing to splines in due course - just curious.

I cannot answer your question, but what puzzles me is that from your description, it is the driveshaft that had fractured and not the hub. Therefore it is likely that this hub was on the car when it broke, and it may indeed be the reason why it broke

Thanks for that - you make a very good point that I cannot answer either.

Garry - if I was to hazard a guess, I would say that one of the hubs was from an XJ6, but which one I do not know

That would be my guess too - was hoping someone would have a car in their garage with the wheels off and could check - then as indicated I will be putting splines on later so is not really an issue.

The difference between them though is that the wheel on the drivers side is supported by the hub but on the passenger side it is supported by the wheel nuts.

Hi Garry,

I have no idea which Jaguar the "other" hub comes from, but the correct one was, as you assumed, the drivers side with a hub ring fitted.

Incidentally, which wheels did you have fitted, chrome plated or painted?

Simon.

Thanks Simon,

My wheels were originally painted but I had them chromed in the mid 80s.

Why do you ask??

I asked because I have been thinking of replacing my chrome wheels, some of them are not all that great, but I haven't decided whether it is worth it yet. I wondered if either you might be selling yours, or would know where I could get some - I don't really need a whole set.

How difficult was it to arrange chroming of a set of wheels and was it expensive?

Regards,

Simon

Simon - as far as I am aware the basic series e-type disk wheels are the same as the basic XJ6/12 wheels so there should be plenty around. Sorry will not be selling my wheels as they will be the last thing to replace when the car eventually gets back on the road - in a few years time.

Price is no longer relevant as it was $80 per wheel back in 1985 - for rechroming the centres have to be taken out and each part chromed separately and then welded back together.

Eastern Wheel Works in east Melbourne (Morabin) could do the work - they recently quoted me about $80 to do the splitting and rewelding on wheels for another vehicle - chroming - no idea.

Cheers

Thanks for the info Garry, I will look into it. I am not really desperate to have the work done, but my wheels could be better. I had the original painted wheels too, but none of these came with me to Australia. I gave some to a Jaguar racer as they were indeed the same as the XJ6 wheels, Series II I think.

Simon
