#1 Front seat foams

Post by e-bygum » Sun Aug 12, 2012 4:44 pm

I have had a quote for the restoration of my front seats but I need to supply the foams. Can anyone recommend a supplier they have used in the recent past?

Can anyone describe the internal construction of the front seat backs?

Hi Pete,

I have a pair of these sitting on my shelf awaiting fitting to the car when I get around to it. I got them from SNG and they appear to be the same as the originals as far as I can see (except the originals on my car have begun to disintegrate after 41 years!

Can't really speak for the internal structure of the rears, as I haven't taken mine apart, but I believe they are similar to other 60s/70s cars with a foam cushion glued to webbing strips steretched across the frame. The cover will probably be glued to the front face. I think they are similar to those in earlier cars in construction (not Early Series 1 cars) and are probably covered in Chris Rooke's book.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Simon

Be careful with the new seat foams. The original were dunlopillow and had 1" holes in the bottom foam. This allowed the foam to compress easily. The newer ones don't have as much give and while giving you a nice looking seat, tend to make you sit a little bit higher in the car. I believe the softer foams are out there but don't know who has them.

Thanks folks.
Bought a pair from Hutsons, not the Dunlopillow type though. They only had NOS original style for the passenger side and I didn't want to chance odd looking seats.
Hutsons said that the Dunlopillow ceased something like 10 years ago because of H & S.
