This might be a dumb question but if I were to take the sump filter out to change or clean it, would gas just come spilling out? I was going to work on the car this weekend but I have about a half tank of fuel that I spent good money on because no one near me has NON-ETHANOL fuel anymore so I had to drive to get it?

Yes! Need to run the tank dry or at least have a means to siphon it off before removing the sump.

thanks I figured. I have gotten it going after a clean of the sparks, they really needed it and I think im going to change them out soon as well and get some new spark plug wires as well. I will run the tank out in the coming weeks and do a clean of the sump tank. is it a filter I need to fully replace or is it one to wash out like a fiber one?
