Has anyone got a reliable cure to the oil canister filter seal.

The large one in the open end that is suppose to fit in
the groove and seal.

Thought I would ask before I start searching for a permanent
cure.

The "cure" is to make sure that ALL of the old seal is removed from the groove and that the new square seal sits properly in the recess.

Also put the cannister on a piece of fine emery paper and rotate back and forth until you get a perfect surface to mate with the seal. Also change the rubber seal under the bolt and the felt seal in the cannister.

With been a little too frequent with oil changing I have found the new seals are too narrow to fit snuggly in the recess provided.

What is needed is a slightly (we are talking millimetres if not millimeter) thicker rubber gasket that actually needs a little pressure to hold it in.

The new ones that come with new filters are..........Chinese.

Close but not accurate enough for purpose. Believe me everything is
clean dry and ready for putting back together but until I find a
proper sized seal it is staying under cover

I agree, the current quality is not up to the job. It is very difficult to get a good seal.

Well over the weekend I have sorted the seal problem......I think. Oil filter back on today and we will see. If it works then I will reveal if not I will be on to mk2. Just a note I have the spin off/on oil filter modification so all I am really doing is sealing for it not to be removed.

The Oil filters from SNGB come with two square section rubber seals. One is a much thicker cross section than the other. On my car one is too tight a fit in the groove and the other is too loose. What is the reason for supplying the two seals and how do I know which is correct for my car? I fitted the thinner of the two but am not confident it will seal well although it seemed the more similar of the two to the seal that came out.

Look away now if you are squeamish. After several attempts trying to
cure the leak with various seals from various sources. Even Andy Rainers

This was My cure. I cleaned all the surfaces and made sure all was good.
Then I purchased some 6mm cord from a well known DIY store. I gave the cord a liberal coating of gasket sealer and put everything back together.

I left it overnight and then filled it with good old 20/50 Millers. Hey Presto no leak. I have since changed the oil and seal .....all is good.

NB I do have the 'spin off filter' conversion but will work for either

resurrecting this thread. I have just fitted the spin off filter and came to the conclusion that the thinner of the two seals was the best option, but like you , not confident that it will seal. Has anyone persevered with the larger seal and squeezed it into the groove and had success? Its not the end of the world to change when in the car, but like us all, I much prefer to do the job correctly first off!

I used the thicker seal on my SNGB adaptor, mine is the S2 version however so I don't know if the groove is wider. I will say that it is a tight fit but it certainly fits.

I'm afraid I eventually, after several different seals , went to the dark side. Well the Toyota black silicone gasket maker dark side.
I'm using the spin on filter so a permanent fix was the desired result. Firstly we scrupulously cleaned the sealing recess, gave it a final polish with some wet and dry paper. Then a bead of silicone was applied in the sealing groove and the seal was carefully smoothed in place with a fine screwdriver the same width as the groove. During this process we were very careful to keep the seal square in the groove. Then a small amount of silicone was applied to the top surface, and the spin on fitting bolted in place.
Seems to have worked very well.
