OK I have just fitte the uprated SNG Barratt kit with new distributor,ballast and amplifier, new HT leads etc.
Went to set the timing but looking down to the crank pully I couldnt see a timing marker??????
Groved under the car and could feel whta may be a timing mark which is set back at the rear of the crank pully. So to set the timing I have to jack the car up to see the timing marks......surly this cannot be the case.
Then again its an E Type so all thgings are possible.
Can any one point me in the direction of how to set the timing??

The timing marks are (should be) on the front face of the harmonic damper. You will have to get under the car to see them. Below the harmonic damper is a graduated plate bolted to the bottom edge of the timing cover. On mine this plate is very rusty and the graduations can not be seen. If you look in the ROM operation 12.21.01 you will see the marks on the damper and the plate.
I haven't timed mine yet so I can't help from experience.

The procedure for setting the ignition timing is operation 86.35.29/7 in the ROM.

Will, I drove mine up onto ramps to have a fighting chance, as Pete states once you find the timing marks they can be very faint. Clean them up and take a while to study what you see, you will find they become more visible the longer you look. Be careful of the wiring if using a strobe light as the route from number 1 to timing mark uses up the lengtn of wire provided. Alfi V12.

Anyway thanks for the bits of info.
Jacked car up found the timing marker and with a long brush managed to put some white on the arrow/A.
Balanced the carbs, ser static timing so now for a timing light exercise.
Will report on success in due course. have to be weekend after next now as oof to Cornwall.
