Driver Door Mirror Location UK Car
#1 Driver Door Mirror Location UK Car
Hi All,
I've just recently got my car back after a 6 year restoration (I've owned it for 19 years and was driving it up to a couple of years before the restoration started) and I'm not sure if its because I'm now in my mid 40s, or if I'm just used to modern car driving, however I'm missing the use of a driver's side door mirror - in particular at night time !
From what I understand, fitting of door mirrors for home market cars were an option at the time and I do have an original (later style) remote RH side door mirror I picked up in the USA. However I cant't find any pictures in the books I have, of a UK car with a door mirror fitted and I'm a little unsure as to where exactly it would need to be mounted?
From what I gather as well, later LH export cars did have a door mirror fitted and if you wanted one for the passenger side, it was an option and situated a little further down from where the LH one was situated on the door?
I'd appreciate if someone on the forum who has an original right hand drive car with the later style mirror fitted, could possibly take some pictures of where exactly is mounted and either upload on here, or email directly to me. It would also be handy if I had some measurements too.
Kind regards to all,
Andrew

Andrew, I recently fitted the Tex door mirrors to my S2 and don't know if they will be the same as you would use. One major flaw with them is the very limited range of movement of the mirror head. I solved this by, of all things, creating a cup washer from a plastic drinks bottle (the moulding eye at the bottom) to go between the stem and the mirror. It sounds silly I know, but with a bit of correct selection and shaping I achieved a much greater range of movement.
It may not be relevant for your car, but if they will be what you use you may wish to consider that mod.
Good luck
Geoff

Geoff,
Thanks for your input. Its the later type of mirror I have (I think they were called "Oyster"?) with the remote which would be correct for my model year. Hopefully your tip will help others with the Tex type of mirror, great ingenuity!
Realistically, I guess I could just judge the location, however it would be great to have the measurements or picture to get it spot on.

I have added a more detailed shot to the xkedata website. The wing mirrors were fitted from new - the original invoice lists these as "Vanden Plas door mirror" at a cost of ?20 (20/9/73).
Quite pricey items given that the chrome wire wheels were only a ?92.50 option!
