#1 Removal of emissions paraphernalia on US S3

Post by doffo25 » Thu Apr 21, 2016 5:15 pm

Hi Guys

Ive just imported a 73 roadster from the US (to Suffolk) and am currently trying to get it fired up. The last car I worked on was in 1979 on a frogeye so on opening up the bonnet of this I immediately went in and had a drink.

I want to keep it as original as poss but am v tempted to strip out particularly the absorbtion cannister and related pipework and the air pump etc.
Can I simply do this and will it need retuning or what else........?

Thanks

David

David,

as far as I know, the absorbtion canister (if your talking about the carbon canister) is the same as on my late S2. It's hooked up with vacuum and vents the tank. If you remove that you might have to get a vented tank lid, and might get petrol smell in the boot? You will have all kinds of left over hoses and clamps from rear to front. To me, even it being US I think I would prefer seeing the correct original setup than an obviously stripped situation. Now if done nicely or done for performance, I could readily accept that. A simple job I don't know - getting in there to all the hoses and their clamps and cleaning everthing up nicely - thats a good few hours. If you mess with petrol tank venting you might get fuel flow issues, hence the vented cap.

You should purchase a copy of the Parts Manual and also the tan coloured US Owners Manual and will become much clearer how it is all connected.
This topic has been covered in the archives on the jag-lovers.org website quite a few times and you can search that for free.

kind regards
Marek
