#1 Thermostatic valve necessary?

Can the thermostatic vacuum switch (item1)be removed and the water rail simply plugged?
Mine is broken anyhow and trying to remove it has been painful with it shearing off
I would be most grateful if someone could tell me whether it's role is only concerned with the emissions control and can be omitted?
The 4 pipes that come from it were not connected to anything anyhow and were plugged, I presume they should have gone to the inlet manifolds or carbs so any info would be most welcome.
It appears that the vacuum from the distributor goes to this switch (item 4) so if i can remove it then where should this pipe be connected to.
Sorry if this seems a stupid question but i have only taken a lawnmower engine to bits before so the V12 is a bit challenging at times

Hi,

I purchased a 1973 S3 a year or so back and it's an ex Arizona car. The first thing I did was strip out all the emission control gear, most of which I suspect had been disfunctional for years. This included the thermostatic vacuum switch, which was also damaged. It simply unscrewed and I replaced it with a threaded plug (allen key drive). If I recall correctly, the thread was BSP 1/2" (British Standard Pipe)
