#1 73 E-Type restore. vacuum retard hose and others missing.

Post by rycymru » Thu Feb 05, 2015 6:31 pm

WARNING: I go into some detail of the problems i've had and things replaced.

1973 E-Type with 87,700 miles. I bought the car 1.5 years ago and the previous owner owned it since March of 1977. The previous owner didn't drive it much the past several years, just started it and drove it down the road every month or so. The car has no rust except for a few tiny spots on door hinges and radiator supports, i plan on a full paint job in the next few years.

After a month, the fuel filter clogged due to sediment in the tank, so the tank was pulled and had it repaired. The car usually doesn't run right until after 5-10 minutes sitting and it has warmed up, then it's fine the rest of the day. But, i've read this is common, or is it?. Since my ownership, i replaced the following: Front suspension, tires, new top, a few hoses, master cylinder, plugs, plug wires, and fuel pump.

Last fall, i noticed the power wasn't where it used to be, more backfiring and popping than before, and the coolant started to come out of the header tank hose, but never overheated. So, i decided to park it for the winter and start tearing the car down. Over the past month or so, I've had the radiator repaired since it was clogged, i have rebuilt the carbs with all new gaskets and needles, have all new coolant hoses since several were in bad shape, cleaned the engine as much as possible, and dropped oil pan to clean any sludge.

As i was tearing into the car i noticed the vacuum retard hose that should be attached to the distributor was missing. Also, the emissions system has been removed. My questions is where does this hose plug into? Do i plug the bypass vlaves on the carbs where vacuum hoses once were? Since the emissions system was removed, is there anything i need to look for to make sure it was plugged up properly so no performance is lost?

Below i have attached some pictures to show you what i am referring to. If anyone could help and possibly post close up pictures and details, that would be greatly appreciated. Also, i am located in Eastern Kentucky if there are any other owners in the area.

Ryan.

Should this be blocked or hooked up to something

This is the only carb with a nipple on the bottom(driver side, closest to firewall)

Hi, Ryan.

The small outlets in your first picture are small diaphragm valves that I believe are meant to stop popping on the overrun. I've used a hose from each carb to a tee, with a longer length running between the carbs on bank A and B. Then I have cut into that hose, inserted another tee and joined to one of the small nipples on the inlet manifold.

The blanked off large nipple under the carb should be blanked - I replaced the cap with a new one from a seller on eBay. I ran the vacuum line from the distributor to one of the inlet manifold nipples too. I blanked the two unused ones.

Unfortunately my car wasn't running very well when I acquired it, and it hasn't been running properly yet since I got it. I am working my way through, doing carbs and replacing all hoses. I have just replaced the coil but the distributor is showing signs of tracking and I'm waiting on a new one arriving. I don't want to hold out too much hope that will cure all the ills but it should help!

Calum,

Thank you for your response. After looking at pictures i found online of cars that have had the emissions removed, i hooked up a few hoses to the bypass valves on the carbs and capped anything else. I put the car back together this weekend and it started up perfectly on Sunday afternoon. The car started up without hesitation and ran better than it has since i've owned it. Next up, is to make sure the timing is correct and the carbs are fine tuned.

Cheers,

Ryan
