#1 Series 3 Auto - rear engine mount

Post by paustin » Sun Apr 05, 2015 1:06 pm

The car has developed an intermittent rattle in the general area of the rear engine mount which I assume means rubbers have failed above and below spring ( or bobbin ).
I've tackled the job before maybe 15 years ago and remember debate over where various washers sit ie not necessarily as shown in workshop manual.

Anyone know for sure?

paustin,

I've got a similar issue with my S3 coupe. Rattles under acceleration, presumably because the engine twists fractionally under torque. Bought a new spring, bobbin and rubbers for top and bottom. Have you resolved your problem, and if so is there any advise you can offer before I attempt to replace the mounting?

Thanks

The advice is to put a jack underneath the whole thing and then undo the nuts/bolts around the edges and then lower whole assembly using the jack and not to simply undo things and let the spring unload itself with a bang.

kind regards
Marek

Marek,

Thanks - care will certainly be a priority. Is there any specification on the final adjustment of the centre bolt through the bobbin ... as in a certain height to be achieved or certain compression of the spring or some such thing?

Springs always compress according tto the weight that sits on top of them. If you wind it up more, the back of the gearbox will just sit higher. See the numerous discussions about rear ride height.

kind regards

#6 Series 3 Rear Engine Mount

Hi Andrew, job done and pleasingly without dropping exhaust!

Seems like a job that has to be repeated from time to time as rubber parts don't like their environment and I have to question if parts available are indeed OEM spec.
Regards,

Phil,

Great to hear it was a success, and without removing the exhaust!! Has the rattle gone?

Did you get a definitive opinion on where all the various washers sit ie not necessarily as shown in workshop manual? The E Type S3 Service Manual's description is vague at best and the exploded diagrams in the E Type parts manual are a little difficult to interpret, given they separate the centre bolt and some washers from the rest of the items. Apparently the Haynes Manual for the S3 is wrong and the except from "Experience in a Book" helps but is still not conclusive. What I'd really love to see is a complete accurate exploded diagram. Anyone seen one of those?

Hi Andrew, no response from anyone re washer locations - just put them back as they came off ( as best deciphered from w/manual ) and yes, quiet as a mouse now.
