My fuel tank has three vent pipes which connect to a smaller tank on the left rear wheel-arch. This smaller tank has a pipe that runs along the car to the right front hand side and I gather should go to the carbon canister (which I don't have). This pipe wasn't connected to anything when I stripped the car.
Do I in fact need the smaller tank, is it an expansion/evaporation-condensing tank?
Can I do away with the redundant pipework to the non-existent carbon canister and if so where is the best place to site the vent-pipe.
I realise that the petrol tank needs to breathe but I don't want any issues in the cabin with petrol smells.
As always any help or advice would be appreciated.

It's the same expansion/evaporation-condensing tank arrangement as found in other Jags of that period and you can find details in the tan coloured US Owners Manual.

No you don't need it. You can plug all of the pipes instead, but if you do, then you need to vent the fuel tank by drilling a small hole in the cap.

If I do as you suggest then wont the filling flap being in the way of the vent hole cause issues?

No. The filling flap has a gap the size of a barn door as far as gas is concerned plus a hose which connects it to the outside in two places.

You aren't trying to cause a draft. You are simply providing a route allowing any excess buildup of vapour pressure to escape the sealed tank. Take a look at any old car and you'll see a hole 1mm diameter or less in the cap. You do have to be careful where you drill, but there is plenty of space.
