This was in the boot when I purchased the car.
I have figured out that it fits in a cage underneath the radiator top shroud and appears to be some kind of expansion vessel or remote top up bottle for the cooling system?
If anyone can tell me what functions it performs and where the top and bottom outlets are supposed to connect to I would appreciate it

Assuming you purchased an E Type, I consider this part is not original to the car.

But then, I might be wrong so correct me. The US patent got me on the non otiginal track. So maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the reply,
Car is a V12 series 3 ex USA
No wonder I couldn't find it in the parts catalogue.
Looking at it again it would appear to be an additional expansion/condensing vessel that a previous owner had added to the car with an input from the expansion tank overflow hose and a discharge pipe.
Is the Jaguar expansion tank overflow pipe prone to dumping coolant on the ground when hot as this may be the reason that the extra tank was fitted?
Has anyone else come across a similar modification?

I am not very knowledgeable about S3 V12s, but since the S2 had a sealed system, I would be very surprised if Jaguar had gone backwards to an unsealed system for the S3 . I suspect this is a non-standard part that has been pressed into service for an overflow container

That's definitely not standard!

A pipe usually exits the top of the expansion tank (just below the pressure cap) and vents out near the steering rack, like this (look top left to bottom right), but careful, mine's (ahem) a bit longer than usual....

......it's quite difficult to tell from the photo, but my car started life as primrose ;-)

Also, check your pressure cap is 13lbs and not the 4lbs one for earlier cars - that might be the reason for your extra collection tank?

It's a pretty good self-regulating system when well maintained. If you over fill the expansion tank the excess just gets vomited out, again maybe another reason for your tank? I found using my middle finger as a dip-stick works well - so it just touches the top of the coolant.
