#1 No fire!

Post by KIN3595 » Sun Jan 10, 2016 8:19 pm

Hi. Went to turn over my v12 for the first time since early December and she would not fire. It turned over ok, plenty of juice in the battery and I could hear the petrol pump working away but wouldn't catch if that makes sense. Never done this before, normally a first time starter but then she has never been left this long between runs. Sprayed a liberal amount of wd40 and made sure by doing a quick charge on the battery but no change. Will remove the Sparks next to check they are clean and not furred up with any carbon but wondered if anyone has ever had a similar issue and what else to try f not the plugs.

Thank you in advance.

Simon

Hi Simon.
Have you tested a plug? Remove one and place it on the engine, Still connected to the HT lead. With a wooden stick, push the plug against the engine and get an assistant to turn the engine with the ignition key. It helps if it is a bit dark so turn off garage lights. You should be able to see the spark. Couple of obvious safety points. Make sure you are not in gear. Be prepared that the engine may start; unlikely but possible and also don't turn the engine over for too long. You will also get a spray of fuel air mix out of the vacant plug hole - beware of this.
Other checks include is the plug wet when you remove it (you'll have to turn it over a couple of times prior to removing the plug to test this.) If you have fuel and a spark then possibly timing is out. Refer to the manual to check basic timing or use a timing light if you have one and know how to use it. You will need an assistant as the timing marks are under the nose of the engine and you'll need someone on the ignition key again. Once again be careful about not being in gear when turning the key.
If that's not the problem then maybe water has got in the fuel, the fuel may have gone off or the spark produced by the ignition is too weak. I assume plug gaps are ok?
Diagnosis is little different from any carburettored car, even though there are more cylinders.
I excluded obvious checks like electrical connections being sound and cables in good condition but you have done that already, right?
Good luck
Regards,
Simon

She lives! Thank you Simon. I did the plugs, cleaned them up checked the gauge. Little bit of easy start and plenty of throttle and she fired first time. Guess there must have been some damp around one of the plugs which worries me a little as the gargae is usually nice and dry. Thank you gain, glad I didn't have to try all the other items you listed! 😳
