Can't find any part numbers but what are people using for the insulating panel facing the spare wheel and the pillar by the fuel filter?

I know this is an very OLD post, But I think what Nigel is referring to the Diamond pattern lino vinyl type material that is actually adhered to the fuel tank (Spare Wheel Side) and lower rearward bottoms of wheels arches. Actually on the car Im doing also had it glued to the transmission tunnel cover. They are Biscuit or Fawn in colour. Very hardy material that is approx 2mm thick.
I have tried quite a few places with samples and no one that is in the interior trim game has seen anything that is similar.
These aren't the harduras as mentioned.
Does anyone know of this material and it's availability. As I'm in need of some to replace the missing and deteriorated pieces in this build.

Yes John it is still available and I have a roll of it. It is black bitumen self adhesive, the colour you mention was probably painted on it, it does accept paint OK.

I used it on my S3 where it was used on the floor as well as the transmission tunnel as shown below.


Best place to buy it is Woolies. http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-985-sou ... sheet.aspx

Best to cut it to shape with scissors first and the warm it with a hair dryer before applying as it makes it softer and easier to mold.

Ian - I dont believe the the product you have indicated is what John is talking about. If I am correct it is the very thin beige coloured vinyl type material that covers just the rear of the rear wheel well in the boot area.

It is beige in colour and has a fabric base - it is only 1mm thick and does not have any bitumen or foam content. The inner side is fabric and the outer looks like a type of vinyl with a cross hatched pattern - it is constructed like vinyl.

Mine needs replacing so I tore off a small sample and took the following pics

The pattern - the white areas are the cotton fabric base.


Shows its side - no bitumin or foam.


The only place I have found this is in the boot covering the rear of the rear wheel wells - no where else. I assume it is to stop drumming rather than outright sound deadening.

Hi All....found a similar type but not the same whilst retrimming my 69 2+2 its a light beige type product 3,4mm thick fitted to the top of the panel over the irs it has a small cross hatch pattern and was a lino type product it was not glued dow very well and when i took it off it was a rigid board that could be bent to shape can just be see in the photos protruding under the underfelt

That is the same type of material, maybe mine measures 2mm cause of the glue bound to the back, that is also maybe why it appears to feel like a lino type product in stiffness, so far I have found at least 6 places where they have used this material.
Behind the door intrusion bars, sandwiched between the door skin and bar.
The spare wheel exposed area of the fuel tank.
The rearward inner wheel arches.
Transmission Tunnel cover
Between the fuel pump to wheel arch mount
A 4x3 piece under the fuel tank expansion tank.

It even looks like the same material used in Steves vehicle, but his appears to be a honeycomb pattern.

Now has does anyone know where to source this material from, or is it no longer available.

The bitumen was used on the transmission cover and also inside the doors on the door skins on S1's - 3's.
In S3's its also on the floor pans as shown below



The slightly thinner fabric type material was on the sides of the fuel tank of my S3 and was different but the bitumen stuff does the same job.
