Rear bonnet grille

Hi all,

How is the rear grille fixed ? Reason for asking is that I have two:
One has 2 „centre“ bolts and good chrome, the other one has the same „bolts“ but also two tabs on the lower side, and bad chrome.

I guess these cannot be rechromed reasonably, so I tend to use the one with the better chrome anyway. Plus I cannot find holes for screws underneath, where the tabs would be.

So - as the „bolts“ have no threading- is there a clamp ?

...P. S. - may it be that the tab-less is an S1 grille and the tabbed version is S2 ?

Hi Carsten,

That grill on my 62 S1 has the tabs and the studs you refer to as ‘bolts’. The studs are attached by small thin nuts that cut there own thread on the stud.

I also had my grill re-chromed!

Ok, so the older version has tabs, and the younger has none ? Or is maybe a cheap repro ?

Hm, so I have to find out how to fix it using only studs. I have no idea where to source those nuts. The car came without the grille. It has the metal plate with the round holes behind the grille.

So does your bonnet not have the two threaded holes on the underside to accept bolts that go through those tabs?

Hi Simon,

Had a look today- yes, there are holes.

But see the two grilles in detail: one never had the tabs, the other one has a stamped makers logo near the tabs:





I can only guess - the tab-less one is a chinese repro. No logo, no tabs.

The BD.19178 Grill at Rear of Bonnet uses both two BD.17290 Thread Cutting Fix and two UFS.419/4H Screw with C.723/A washer to affix the grill to the bonnet. I think the BD.17290 is a sheet metal nut similar to Jaguar Stud Nut - BD-21040 Used in conjunction with BD-20887. As shown here: http://xks.com/i-7082613-jaguar-stud-nu ... o%3DSearch

This is an example as you will need the correct size.

Thanks Geoff - I have seen something like that, maybe on my Hillman Imp ? Years ago.

I searched SNG, and they offer a „Spire clip“. I‘ll put two on my next order list.

Question is why one of them has no tabs ? And will it stay there without them ? I‘m seriously thinking about producing two latches and using very small M4 bolts to make my own tabs underneath.

I just don‘t have the 120 Euros it needs to buy a new one, plus mine is not bad, its just the tabs it never had...

The grille without feet is for an S3 (BD35935). The unthreaded studs pass through a detachable mounting plate (BD35934) and are held to it by spire nuts. The mounting plate is fixed to the bonnet via 2 self tapping screws and IIRC the distance between these is not the same as that for the S1/2 grille.



This is a repro grille fitted to SNGB's S1 - sorry the feet are not that clear but you can see them and the studs which appear to be unused here.


PS - I have a new grille with both feet and studs (Robeys) which I don't intend to use but I am looking for the S3 type (and also an original mounting bracket). PM me if you decide not to use your 2 stud one and are interested in a swap.

Ah-ha ! One of my grilles has traces of circumferal scratches caused by those !

Isn‘t it in fact car-archeology what we‘re doing here ?

Now, sourcing them is impossible, correct ? I don‘t even have a name for them...not even in german.

Hi Bob,

I sent you a PM.

Regarding the distance between those studs, its 11.5 cm, on both of my grilles, S3 and S1/2.

The retainer plate is present in my car, though it is not screwed in place, it sits inside the stiffener plus it is glued on top, inside the bonnet bulge. So, this was changed at least from S 1.5 (my bonnet) to S3.

The condition of my S3 grille is „good to very good“, I would not hesitate to fit it.

I got a S3 mounting bracket from SNGB and tried to fit it. There are two holes in the bracket to allow self tappers to go through from the holes in the bonnet where the feet of the S1 grille fit and two holes for the fixing pins on the back of the grille to go through. The bracket is 3mm too tall to go in the aperture in my bonnet.
Being a Z cross section and having a curvature to follow the bonnet shape, it is impossible, for me at least, to modify it to fit, so I can't mount a grill which doesn't have feet!

Hi Bob,

I answered your PM, but pardon me, I did not see your picture before.

So, this is indeed a bit tricky, and I see no easy way out here either. What you can try is to hammer yours flat and re - bend it, or cut the base of just above the flat lower part, and re-weld. It needs metal work to make it fit, maybe best to ask a pro.

In my car, it looks different, I‘ll upload a picture tomorrow.
