Clip on door frame mirrors

Hi all looking for some advice / ideas
Do the door frame mounted mirrors work , in regards manovering the car around and not just for driving and overtaking ( or looking out for rossers behind )
Also if they do I'm looking for some round ones I saw on an E some time back similar to the ones in photo ( which don't fit an E Type door frame ) .

I find they do need re-tightening every so often as they loose some stiffness when they are moved around. Over 60 km/h the larger the service the more prone they are to being deflected inwards unless all the adjustment screws are very tight.

The biggest problem is the clamp is designed for a flat frame whereas the E-Type Frame is curved. They will invariably fall off at speed, possibly hitting the bodywork or another car. My solution was to grind the part that mates with the frame into a curve to match. I then attached the mirrors placing a piece of inner tube rubber between the mount and frame. Once tightened I trimmed the rubber with a sharp knife so it can't be seen. They have not moved since despite some very spirited driving! Incidentally the supplied nylon cushion is useless.

The ones you showed have too short an arm for the E-Type, whereas the Holden ones are ideal allowing plenty of adjustment which you need for the passenger mirror.

Yes, not round, but I'm sure I've seen these at the NEC with round mirrors. Sorry, can't remember who was selling them, not Fosseway, though maybe they'd be willing to source the round version?

They might even be the same ones that Holden sell?

The solution I found to permanently attaching these mirrors is to use the small round gel pads that are sold to stick your tax disc holder to the windscreen. They squash between the screw head and the frame.
The other trick I found when tightening the screws, was to lever the back of the mirror frame against the window frame with a screwdriver. You'll be surprised how much tighter you can get the screws by doing this.
So far so good as far as my mirrors are concerned.

I have one supplied by SNGB. Works a treat.

Agree with the rubber rather than plastic suggestion.

I also replaced screws with equivalents that use an Allen Key to tighten. They look neater and you can get better purchase.

That said - they need the occasional check after a long trip.

I've been wondering about this, in fact I have one for my 340 that I have never fitted.

It seems to me that you have to cut a piece of the window channel rubber out for clearance??.

Or am I missing something?

No cut out required on mine Paul.

That said, the window channel inners on my car are originals so maybe if you have new ones they would be thicker in profile and thereby requiring trimming.

No mine are original.
To be honest I was thinking about my experiences with my Jaguar340, which has very similar thin chrome window frames; maybe the fitting experience will be different with the 'E' even through the clip on mirror is the same.

I am now encouraged to try it :-).

I have fitted the FOSSEWAY one but they slide out of the frame too easily.... i'll fit rubber as you say David

I too got the Fosseway mirrors.
Yes they slip off way too easily and also the threaded part to receive the screws are too thin and in danger of stripping.
My current solution is to have a safety wire from the mirror to the inside winders. (Already tested )
I glued the supplied plastic pieces to the frame which appears to help.
I also welded additional nuts to the mirror frame, behind the threads to back them up, no chance of stripping the thread now.

I feel a need to revisit the security, using the rubber. Onward....

Much as it feels wrong you do need to grind the mirror base to match the curve of the window frame. Think about it - curved surface meets flat surface is never going to work!

These are TEX mirrors, which are available via XJs/Moss in the U.S. They look like the Fosseway items depicted earlier in the thread. I modified the mounting clips so that they could be turned around with the "U" facing to the rear for more security. The modification consisted of cutting out the bottom of the "U" and welding in a wider piece of metal. The clips virtually disappear within the door frame when closed. Yes, a small piece of the window frame seal would have to be trimmed away (I don't even use them on my car). I need to remove these and make them look more finished. But they do the job. Note that the width of the modified clip needs to be wide enough to include a thin piece of material that will grip the chrome.

I found 3 problems with the Fosseways, partially resolved now.

First, as said, the plastic mounting pad supplied is useless. We have a rubber "gripper" sheet my wife uses in the kitchen to open jars etc. Some sort of rubber. I surreptitiously cut some off and use that instead. Works well.

Nexxt, one of the reasons they come loose, apart from curvature, is that the bracket doesn't go far enough onto the frame, (at least not with my frames) I cut a length off the back of the bracket so it now pushes in further and the screws can tighten better.

Finally, I found there wasn't enough clearance for the window to wind uo easily, so yes, had to cut some rubber off the seal.

Works well now, although still have to re-tighten the head off the mirror to stop in drooping during use.
