Fosseway Hi-Torque Starter and Spigot Plate

Hi Guys. I have a Fosseway hi-torque starter for my 4,2 Series I OTS E-Type. I noticed that with the Spigot Plate fitted, the mounting nuts only just fit on the mounting studs. I presume the Spigot Plate must be fitted to ensure the gears line up properly or should I be fitting this starter motor without the Plate? Yours aye. George

You need to fit the plate otherwise it could end in tears. Or a chewed up flywheel anyway.

Probably worth a chat with Simon first tomorrow morning first.

To be sure, I measured the throw out of the starter and compared that with the distance to the ring gear on the flywheel. That proved I needed the plate to fit the high torque starter. I have photos somewhere.

FIrst I took measurements with and without the plate.



Then I measured the throwout. (I needed a third hand to photo the measurement.)

Then I measured the distance between the starter ring and the flange on the bell housing, which determined that without the spacer the throwout would crash the ungeared portion of the pinion into the ring gear.

Chris - Brilliant photos thank you so much. I will without question fit the spigot plate.

I have spoken to Simon at Fosseway and he has also advised that the spigot plate must be fitted. It is just a pity that slightly longer mounting screws are not attached but I suppose that as long as the nut can be fully wound onto the thread that will suffice.

I know that this is an old thread but with the current (no pun intended) comments on high torque starters I thought that I would update this.
I have a Fosseway starter and being aware of the issue I phoned Simon. Hi says that the latest starters from Fosseway have been modified so that no spacer plate is required. Hence I’ve not fitted mine.

Not sure that this really provides much clarity but as Steve has said on other posts measure and check.
