#1 64 distributor cap

Post by valley7 » Tue Oct 30, 2018 12:27 am

Hey guys,

I was recently trying to tune my 64 XKE 3.8L... while I was adjusting the SU's, the engine stalled. I thought it was something I had done on the carbs so I put the settings back, to no avail. Eventually I found that it was not getting any spark and the culprit was the center post on my original Lucas distributor cap is no longer conducting. I ordered a new one from the internet since I didn't want to molest an original part (working or not). However the new one does not have a cut out for wire that feeds the points and I'm not sure it will just clip on even if I do that.

So, what should I do? Does anyone have any advice for a repair of the original, or know of an exact replacement I can purchase?

Thanks,
Stephen

NOS caps regularly turn up on eBay. Here is one on sale at the moment: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COVER-DISTRI ... rk:30:pf:0

The Lucas cap part number you want is 54414989

Try the Distributor Doctor. I bought a number of original caps from him recently.

Thanks guys! I got one on Ebay. I put it in my car and still no spark!

I found that in addition to the center post being failed on the distributor cap the rotor was shorted out as well. New rotor and we are good to go.
