SNGBarratt.
My car, same as yours, uses a duplex V belt, C24291, which is approx 1100mm long.

Hello All, I've had real struggle finding the correct belt for my S1 3.8. US import. SGNB supplied a c2421x which didn't fit (too short). Eventually I sourced a c24291c from the U.S. Tight, but got the thing on. Does anyone know what the difference is?

C15840
The first 500 cars up to #860004, 885020, 850091 & 875385 had the XK 'S' engine, which was basically the same one fitted to the XK150 S, hence the 'pumpkin' head colour. These used a 'V' belt of 1/2" width, 40° angle, 39 3/8" outside circumference, 36 3/4" inside circumference and 7/16" thick.

C15840 'N' suffix
After the first 500 cars and up to engine R5249 (~January 1963) a 'notched' drive belt C15840 was used ('N' suffix in after market catalogues) of slightly different dimensions (wider at 1/2"). In October 1961, from engine no R1845, a fan belt tensioner was fitted but required no change to the fan belt.

C19524
From R5250, RA1001 and subsequent a Duplex (twin-vee) drive belt C19524 was used and required modified pulleys. It was at this point ~ January 1963 that Jaguar began supplying a spare belt because its unusual design meant finding a replacement at Motor Factors was difficult. Although the Duplex belt is slightly shorter it could still be used to replace the earlier notched belt, but not vice versa obviously. The belt as supplied was coiled with an identifying card label.

C24291
For the 4.2 cars the belt was changed to C24291 to accommodate the alternator pulley with its different diameter to the dynamo and had a 40.5" outside circumference.

Even the experts get the variety of belts wrong. I had one, supposedly correct but it was too big for the pulleys. The result was uneven heating of the belt, which then began to disintegrate. The consequence was a loose piece of wire that started to flail around the engine bay. No damage, but it was annoying to have to replace a belt on the roadside. I alway carry a spare, and this was the first time I needed to replace one on the road in 17 years and 65,000 miles.

The belt should fit fully into the pulleys.

PCINGRAHAM - I am currently in the throes of a fan belt search for my '64 E-Type FHC. There are apparently several belts and this forum has been very helpful - except for actually finding the 1029mm (40.5"" belt desired. Here in the States SNG sells a C24291x that is 1100mm long. C19524 at 1010mm is too short and we cannot get enough slack into it - 1/8" up and down. My car until recently had the canvas finished belt on it and had the proper slack and the jockey pulley in place. The belt was pretty well shot, so I ordered the standard 1010mm belt and it is is apparently too short. The 1050mm belt (C19525 is too thick so it too is too tight....I am checking with the sNG folks, XKs/Moss and Welch in Ohio (who have a lot of NOS bits..). I will keep you posted on progress. Hard to have a car sidelined by a belt.....all the best, Pete

Best way to deal with this problem is to drive the car to a car spares place that have a good stock of belts and try different belts until you find one that fits nicely
In the long run it's the best way to do it

That's interesting - mine is too short, too. (from SNG). Quality issue??...

I fitted an old one for the moment, but must source correct new one.

Where did you find one that fits??
