Newbe with a new type 2

Hello everyone!

I just joined this club, well because I just bought a barn find type 2 OTS.

I just started the full restoration of this E-Type and was wondering if I could find help here to guide me with some technical questions I may have from time to time?

I have a silly one to start with: where can I find the engine's serial number?

I will do a 100 points restoration, but since I've never done an E-type before, I may ask from time to time questions about color of parts and type of replacement for discontinued or dangerous materials.

For instance, next to the exhaust manifold is an asbestos shield, what can be used to replace this hazardous material and stay 100 points?

The bonnet brackets are gray. Is it paint or some type of plating?

Is this forum the right place to ask these types of questions?

Francis - the engine number is on the bellhousing flange at the rear left of the engine - arrowed

I just went and looked, I found the tranny's number but not the engine's number at that spot. could it be somewhere else?

Hi Francis,

One manual does mention that, for early models, the engine number was stamped on the right side of the engine above the oil filter and also at the front of the cylinder head casting.

My gearbox no is KE9309 so it would suggest your car was built earlier. I'm not sure when the location of the engine number stamping changed so it might be worth looking above the oil filter.

Otherwise someone more knowledgeable might be able to assist.

C29040FF with a production date of 15-01-69 in line with the production date of my car, February 13th 1969.

Check the photos, it's a bit above the starter just below the head.

after looking in the XKEDATA base this does not look like an engine number at least not in line with numbers on cars produced around the same time...

The C number is a casting number and should be disregarded. The number for a 1969 engine should indeed be on the left hand flange . You appear to have cleaned the bellhousing flange ( which does not have a number ) but not the block flange ( which should) . Sometimes it is necessary to scrape paint off the flange to be able to see the number. If after doing this, you still cannot locate it , look above the oil filter housing . You will need to get under the car, use a good torch, and again scrape paint or perhaps wire brush it to see the number

The bonnet brackets ( on which the bonnet swivels) should be aluminium alloy and therefore will be a silver grey, but are more usually painted body colour .

I am almost sure that the flange does not have it. Above the oil filter is the casted Jaguar in a losange logo. Where should it be in reference to that? I do have a heavy coat of crud in that area.

I have the engine out on a dolly so I won't need to get on all four...:)

Finally! I found it between the oil filter and the Jaguar logo: 7R 4180-9

On the same lines, You have the serial number. On mine it's 1R8482
You have the Transmission number. On mine it's KE 5491
I now have the engine number 7R 4180-9

There is a number atop of the picture frame and it's the same as the serial number.

Where do I find the body number?

The body number is usually on a tag , either on the left hand rear wheel arch under the covering, or in the number plate surround area . If the latter this is often missing because of panel replacement

I also found the body number hand written on some of the panels. It was a yellow marker of some kind and I found the number inside the rear hatch and on the back of the passenger dashboard fascia.

Clearly parts were tagged for individual cars on the production line. Has anyone else found any handwritten numbers?

Yes they are found all over the place - mainly on the trim items as you say.

So if the plate is missing from the left inner front wheel, I just need to be attentive in the disassemble phase for some manual writing?

Why not obtain a Heritage certificate from the Jaguar Drivers Club "E-Type register"?

For a small fee they will tell you all the build information that was filed when the car came out of the factory: Engine / chassis / Body / who sold it / who the first owner was / original colour / original registration etc....
