#1 Philips Head Screws

Post by Philk » Thu Jan 23, 2020 4:17 pm

It is some time since this topic last cropped up on the forum.... Does anyone have any insights into when Philips/cross-head screws found their way onto the front side light/indicator lenses? Was this during the 3.8 production run or afterwards. In April 1964, Spares Bulletin P115 announced the use of Philips Headed screws for the Headlamp Chrome Finishers (at the same time as new left/right handed rubber seals were introduced for the glass). Looking through the bulletins and the normal reference works, I have found no reference though to when cross-headed screws arrived on the other front lenses.

Thank you for that..... most helpful. It's interesting given this would apply to both 3.8 and 4.2 cars whereas you would have thought the 4.2s would have gone to cross-head/Philips screws.

I just dug out my copy of the Haddock/Mueller book "JAGUAR E-Type Six Cylinder Originality Guide."

- On page 267 is a photo of an early-type side/flasher lamp lens - with slotted screws - and a photo of the second style of sidelight/turn signal lamp lens "introduced in early 1965" with Phillips head screws.
-- The Phillips head screws have slash marks 45 degrees off from the main pattern.

So, the "JCNA Series 1 E-Type Judges Guide" appears to conflict with the Haddock/Mueller book. I'd go with the Haddock/Mueller information.

The Phillips [sic] screws have no secondary marks. Such screws are Pozidriv [sic] invented by Phillips to work far better. Using the wrong (and quite different) screwdriver will not work properly and will chew up the fasteners.

Interestingly, on SNG's and David Manner's website, the picture of Part No. 8606 (Screw securing front lens) is shown as Posidriv (i.e. with the additional grooves at 45 degrees to the cross head). SNG's website says it is for the 3.8 FHC and OTS notwithstanding the fact that these should be slotted. I have not been able to find a slotted screw on SNG's website suitable for the front/rear lens on the S1 3.8 E Type. On Robey's website, Part 8606 shows an aftermarket slotted screw.
