#1 S1 3.8 Data Plate
Where can I source a reproduction chassis plate for the 3.8? It has to be correct and have the space in between Tex and Aco... I couldn't find it on SNG's website for starters
Thanks
Thanks

Ah excellent, thank you :) Do you know when the change for the 3.8 litre cars occurred? being an October 1962 car I would imagine its an "early" type car

No sure but I seem to recall the change occurred after the first 500 cars. The Regent/Caltex/Texaco oils were listed in the Second Edition of the Service Manual (published Autumn 1961) so I guess the changed they data plate to match. XK's Unlimited and SNGB sell this reproduction which is printed rather than etched, so is wrong anyway:
XK's:

SNGB:

Classic Jaguar in the States sell this one though which seems to be a much better quality (photo-etched rather than printed)and has the gap between Tex and co:

Mine's a September '62 US FHC chassis 886987 and still has the original Id plate with the gap in the "Tex aco". The Classic Jaguar plate looks pretty good to me!
Cheers.

Ah, I could do with a new anorak ;) there's always something to learn on here, by the time we come to assemble the 3.8 I'll be a proper "enthusiast", although the amount of knowledge I harbour at my age is probably unhealthy
it does help when you want the answer to the question anyway.

Here is what the printed Chassis plates look like after one year!

New one I have is from Classic Jaguar and is superb. I changed it because not only was it poor quality but the clown who stamped it (badly) must have been dyslexic. He obviously had a spare zero left over omitted from the engine number but thought it was a shame to waste it so added it to the end of the gearbox number
If you are thinking of having your car restored or worked on by a company in the North East of England - avoid them like the plague.
I only wish we could start a thread listing all the bodgers, idiots and rip-off merchants in the E-Type world. The list is long .............. On the other hand there is also a long list of people who work diligently and professionally and can be trusted with both your car and your hard earned cash and they are listed in our Knowledge Base.

#9 Re: S1 3.8 Data Plate
As a thread resurrection Just adding to the debate that I have a 1967 2+2 manual and the original data plate has REGENT CALTEX, TEX ACO, so with a space on a car produced in 1966 registered in early 67.

My April 66 plates is exactly the same Pat. It's too dark to check the 68 but I'm betting it's identical.
As for the quality, the ONLY place on two continents I have ever bought correct bas-relief etched plates is www.classicrepro.co.uk and they are good value as well. They have a large list of stuff arranged by make.
