#1 Engine mount torque settings

Post by Grant » Wed Apr 01, 2020 10:17 am

Good Morning Everybody

Another Isolation job !
If it wasn’t for earning no money what’s so ever I could really get used to this :-)

But I’m just about to try changing my front engine mounts on my driveway mostly from above I guess ,
But was wondering if anyone new where I can find the torque setting if there are any ? Or is it just ft ?
Any other tips doing this great fully received

Thank you

Grant

Hi Grant...always worth useing the search function....I doubt there,s much that isnt already on the forum.....u may find shims under your mounts..possibky stuck to them or the frame...these were used as required from the factory..probably to ease a bit of clearance for carbs etc from the frames... viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3688

I’ve just done mine,
Couldn’t find a torque setting so gave the centre bolts a good hard tug using a 24” bar. Can’t see them coming loose.

Likewise with the money side, pensions cover the day to day and a bit of part time covers garage activities.

Edit, just seen Steve’s post. I added one shim under the carb side. (Gratefully donated by a forum member some time ago)

There is no need for a torque setting for these, since they are not under dynamic load . With all due respect to Tim, a hard tug on a 24 inch bar sounds like over-torqueing by a considerable margin, and the paradoxical effect of this is to stretch the stud which enables it to self loosen much more easily . I can't remember what size these are , but IIRC it is something like 3/8 UNF, and 30 lb/ft will be ample in this usage

Hi All

Thank you for such quick replies, I’m just having fun finding a jack low enough to support the sump with a piece of wood on it as well .
And thank you for point out the shimes , funny cause I have search here but not really found much . But I will look out for the shimes now ,

And try the 30lbs of torque as I have very little idea about this ,

Thank you all again

When I’m out in the garage a bit later. I’ll check the torque and se how hard I pulled!
Maybe interesting

Hi Guys

Well that was a bit of a job! Although they aways are ....
After cutting four bits of 8 x 2 to raise the car high enough so I could get a jack with wood on it underneath to support the engine whilst I undid the mounts.
It’s obviously very fiddly but do able , the right hand side went very smoothly although it was completely shot but the left one rubber part decided to just disintegrate, which meant the metal threaded centre just went round and round.
After trying mole grips and even lowering in back down to put weight on it I finally decided to take the whole metal mount off, again a pain to get to but after some perseverance I finally got it off then had to put it in the vice to separate them.
Then the same all in reverse with a few grazed knuckles it’s back on its wheels and tightened up to just under ft!
All in all a tough but do able job that was very needed and satisfying to do .

Thanks again for all your input

I hope this may help the next person

Cheers

Grant

I'm sorry Christopher bit I have to disagree. There is always a need for a torque setting and the engine mounting bolts certainly are under dynamic load. Try running your car without any fitted.

My engine mounting bolts are 1/2" UNF between engine and rubber mount and the mount to frame bolts are 5/16 UNF. I would suggest around 17 lbf.ft for the mount to frame bolts and 75 lbf.ft for the engine to mount bolts. Do not lubricate the threads.

Remember, for every nut a washer and for every joint a torque value (as a proxy for clamping force).

Regards
Stuart

Well, with nothing better to do today I went to check these.
Originally pulled with a good firm tugs on a 24” bar, the thread suggests 75ft/lbs

I could only get access to the exhaust side and with my torque wrench mine were not so far off.

Not sure what this means but I’m happy !
